Has anyone reacted badly to HRT?

In terms of side effects? HRT gel and then progesterone on days 15 to 26. Helped the symptoms of perimenopause but potentially causing side effects such as lightheadedness, slurred speech and other neueological symptoms.

Splitting headaches due to progesterone. Had to stop.

Ask to switch to progesterone suppositories - stopped all of my side effects as I’d felt exactly like you’d described. As an ex alcoholic the drunk feeling was NOT pleasant!!

Yeah i swelled up and felt awful!

Solaire18381 · 14/09/2025 23:15

Not with symptoms like you but it did give me urinary symptoms. So bad I had to stop!

Alittlebitweird · 16/09/2025 22:10

First episode was the day before I started progesterone. Previously on patches ( allergic to glue ) then tablets. Didn't seem to work. Neurologist ruled out my meningioma ( benign growth in brain ) and epilepsy. He was a bit stumped. Suggested atypical migraines. Can I have migraines with no headache lasting days and in clusters? So tired of the lightheadedness. I'll follow the migraine "instructions " but if no change i might stop hrt for a month to see if there's a difference. I'm 51. Getting older is not a walk in the park. 🙈

You can just use the 100mgs x 2 vaginally. The 200mgs is a pessary (not a suppository).
It's not licensed for vaginal use in the UK so your GP will have to agree, and may not.

Might be worth you seeing a specialist privately if you can afford it.

First point is to decide which hormone is making you feel unwell.

You could try reducing the dose as too many women start too high when it's better to start low and build up- easy enough with gel.
2 pumps is the usual medium dose but you can start on one and see how that goes.
