Mirena coil insertion and feeling low

I had the mirena coil fitted on Wednesday. For HRT so taking it with oestrogel. Thought I'd try coil as an alternative to utrogestan but now wondering if that was a big mistake. Woke at 5 yesterday and today. Feeling really low and sad and worthless. Do you think this will settle or does this mean it doesn't agree with me?

I didn’t get on with the coil but it took around five days before I noticed the emotional impact (anxiety, weepiness, and fatigue) and then ramped up over the next week. I’m not sure if that delay is normal though and am guessing we’re all different.

It does seem early to have side effects but I'm sure it must be the coil. Did you have it removed?

Sometimes it's knowing something new is there, so again out brains are reacting to that think similar to the placebo effect but the other way round. Then it's also that it's getting used to your body and you need to give it time to settle, it can take up to 3 months but should be fine before that. Try and get into your normal routine, drink lots of water, sleep well, go on a run or just walking, swimming etc. Try and get your mind away from it and try to keep doing things. Give it time, and see how it goes, it took mine a long time to settle, but also see what the positives are as well, as they happen. If you want to reasses and think about taking it out, talk to your GP first but I'd wait a while to fully give it time to actually work.

Thank you I'll try that. I am so sensitive to any change and also prone to anxiety. I'm kicking myself as felt pretty good before having the coil fitted but thought this could double up as contraception.

I did have mine removed after seven weeks - I was trying to make it to three months to see if it settled but that was a bad call, by four weeks I was a mess and my GP offered to take it out then and I should have said yes.

It’s hard as it works so well for so many women but not all of us.

Yes I think I'm going to struggle if it doesn't improve but I'll try and ride it out to see if things get any better. Thanks all

This was basically me. I waited 7 or 8 weeks. Wish to god I’d removed it sooner. I was so depressed on it. My mood started to improve within 24 hours.

How did it go? did you have it removed in the end? I had mine fitted a week or so ago for the same reasons and I feel awful today. I had it fitted when I first got married 20 years ago but only last about 6 weeks then before I had it taken out. I was advised to try it again as I have had polyps and they wanted to control my heavy bleeding.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I really struggled with the coil for several reasons and had it removed after about 7 weeks. But everyone is different and I know other women seem to adjust to it eventually. I realised I had no strong reason to keep it which is different to your situation?

Thanks for replying. Glad you got it sorted for you in the end. I was trying to see if I could push past the first 3 months to see if it settles but I'm not holding much hope to be honest because as well as feel low and anxious, I am itchy all over my body, not sure I can take it much longer lol. Will see how it goes 😊

I felt awful on the coil for 4 months. Mood was ok though but I had a racing heart, palpitations and insomnia. At 4 months though all symptoms improved and I feel much better. I am noticing a little weight gain now though which I am keeping an eye on. I think the advice is to give it at least 3 months for symptoms to settle, hard though when you are in the middle of it.
