Has perimenopause made me lose my sweet tooth?

I have a ridiculously sweet tooth. Couldn't go a night without chocolate or dessert.

As soon as dinner is finished usually I'm craving sugar.

But recently days have gone by where I just don't want anything sweet. Wondering if it's hormone related due to peri (or HRT).

I suppose I should be glad and my teeth and my body will thank me but it is kind of strange! Anyone else had this?

How many days?

How many days?

This time a couple of days. But I had it previously for a couple of weeks. I might track it over time actually.

I very much doubt it’s got anything to do with Peri or hormones

Crategate · 01/09/2025 20:15

I find I'm more bloated which puts me off food but particularly sweet food

If hormones can influence sugar cravings during periods why can't they work the other way at other points in time?

Yeah makes senss but this is more to do with the actual craving itself. Happily ate dinner just not interested in anything sweet.

OP you’ve not fancied something sweet for a few days…

and last time it happened, the desire for sweet stuff returned as normal

ebb and flow 🤷‍♀️ in what you fancy to scoff post dinner
nothing to do with hormones in my opinion

It might be to do with hormones. I'm vastly less of a sugar hound since menopause, and the reduction definitely began during peri. I'm also developing all sorts of intolerances to all sorts of foods, so I do get bloated and uncomfortable, but my lack of interest in sweet food does not change.

I still love chocolate, cakes and ice-cream, but I'm just not as interested in them any more. Can easily not eat them. They no longer drive me. And as for sweets and sweet drinks: nope, don't want them at all.

This! Mine seems to be more and off than yours but yes my hunch is falling estrogen levels. Like period cravings in reverse.

Well there we go Op… something positive about peri! 🍾

But I'm on HRT.

Same but the whole thing about peri vs menopause is that we have a lot of natural hormone fluctuations during this period. So HRT helps to even that out to an extent but not entirely for some of us. So you could still have a day where certain hormones should be lower than they should be. Definitely the case for me generally. Feel much better most of the time but not all.

Anyway this is my guess, can't find anything re reduced cravings except a couple of forums where women have reported similar things so who knows.

This is interesting. Conversely I've found my sugar cravings going through the roof alongside my other peri symptoms... the fatigue in particular makes me want more sugar. So I'm sure hormones affect the cravings - I guess when it's all fluctuating all the time it can change from day to day...

hmmm interesting, I used to eat a lot of chocolate, now I don’t really fancy it that much 😳
Never used to be a crisp person - now I’ll choose crisps over chocolate
biscuits though. I could never give up biscuits

It's so interesting how things change. I do think there must be something hormonal going on somewhere.

Perhaps it's self-preservation: as our ability to handle sugar decreases, do our bodies instinctively choose foods less likely to spike insulin?

Love this! Our body does behave in similar ways when it comes to pregnancy cravings (reflecting what's lacking).

Can't see anything online that suggests it's this but then there's not enough research on menopause generally.
