hi, hoping someone can share their experience and shed some light on what could be happening. (I will of course be going to the doctor, but in the meantime I thought I’d ask on here)
im F 38, healthy. 3 kids.
for the past year my periods have gone nuts. Absolutely bonkers. They use to be very manageable, quite light, barely any cramps, I was like a walking advert for lovely periods. Now I bleed so heavily that I have to wear a night pad, inside period underwear at night. And even then I’ll bleed through. they last for a good 5/6 days, then stop…… only to come back about a week later just as heavy as before. It’s seriously having an effect on my work as I have to change my tampon and pads so frequently.
im tired, boiling hot, having trouble sleeping, have incredibly itchy ears and brain fog. All of which I’ve never had before.
im on the pill. Keep trying to persuade my DP to get the snip but he changes the subject quickly. The implant didn’t work well for me nor have other methods.
Could this be the start of perimenopause? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Yep, itchy ears, tiredness, periods changing... all very familiar. Welcome to the wonderful world of changing hormones and all the fun it brings! 🤣

I’d recommend the mirena coil. My periods stopped altogether once I had that, and they were very much like yours.

Hi @BB333
It sounds like peri menopause.

And it's quite early.

Does premature or early menopause run in your family?
That's periods stopping by 40 or 45.

Your GP needs to either run some blood tests for you or refer you to a gynaecologist who is experienced in early menopause.

You could possibly benefit from HRT.

You could have a Mirena coil which offers the progestogen part of HRT (which is mandatory for women with a womb) and then you'd just add estrogen as a pill, patch or gel you rub on your arms/legs.

The Mirena is great for stopping heavy periods but it won't do anything for your other symptoms that need estrogen.

If your GP isn't up to speed or fobs you off (many know very little about menopause and early menopause), you can refer yourself to a specialist (ask around on here for suggestions if you're stuck) and it costs about £250 for an appt. If they recommend HRT you can then get it via your GP longer term.

The blood loss sounds horrendous. I would not be suprised if you weren't anemic. You need to push for a referral OP as this is NOT NORMAL. Please do and update. You help others doubting themselves by posting so honestly

You should also ask to be checked for
fibroids with that level of bleeding.

Thank you everyone. Yes, will definitely be sending a msg to the doctors. Will go from there.

I had the same. Horrific flooding and very short cycles after a whole lifetime of easy periods. Scans confirm multiple large fibroids and I'm severely anaemic. Now I just need to wait a year to see a gynaecologist.

Get to the GP and ask for your iron levels to be checked, a referral for a scan and meds to help the bleeding while you wait.
