Palpitations

Has anyone experienced post menopause palpitations? I’m four years post meno and seem to be through the worst of it but suddenly seem to have started getting palpitations (feels like missed beats) several times a day. Often after eating or drinking. I have an ECG booked but not for a couple of weeks. Has anyone experienced this? I’m hoping it is just down to the menopause.

Hi, I have, I think I’m in peri but maybe menopause, I’m on patches.
It’s not often, just occasionally but it feels weird and not nice, it’s hard to explain. Sometimes I can feel like it’s going to happen before it does.
ive never had them before so I think it is menopause.

I get them during the night sometimes. I’m on HRT and it was one of my more stubborn symptoms, but more estrogen helped. I know what you mean about sensing it’s going to happen before it does @Bella7819 - horrible feeling.

Yes I used to get them quite regularly and only realised while reading your post that I haven't had them for ages (post meno and on HRT).

I get these an awful lot, and they started right at the beginning of my peri symptoms - about 6-8 years ago now! I've had numerous investigations, including two 24 hour monitors (where I pressed a button whenever I thought I'd had a run of palpitations or ectopic beats), some ECGs over several years, and most recently an ultrasound after a general MOT (cardiologist thought he could hear a bit of 'turbulence' that he wanted to double-check in case it indicated a minor defect, and it didn't). The cardiologist I saw last year said - some people just notice their natural ectopic beats and sense palpitations more easily. And I'm one of them, unfortunately. I can't get to sleep on my left side because I feel it more there, and nighttime can be the worst for this because everything else is dampened down. I also get little dizzy rushes when this happens, sometimes, which doesn't do much to help my calm!

Basically, I've been looked at a lot and it's just the way it is. I've been on HRT for 3 years and while I think it dampened it down initially, it's back. Mine are worse (or more obvious to me) if I'm really stressed, very tired, or unwell.

I had it lots. All the time. Had ecg, 24 hour monitor etc

Have given up caffeine and they have almost completely stopped. Have the odd flutter very very rarely now.
Worth a try.

Thanks for answering. I have definitely had them before when unwell but don't feel particularly stressed or tired. Hopefully the tests will put my mind at rest.

Interesting about the caffeine. Did you give up tea as well?

I had them and gave up caffeine and all was fine. Just swapped normal coffee and tea for decaff versions which I don’t really notice anyway. I can still have the odd normal tea or coffee if I’m out without it causing any problems and I haven’t given up chocolate.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 24/08/2025 08:51

I drink decaf tea, coffee and coke.
Still eat chocolate.

Passthecake30 · 24/08/2025 17:02

I had them about a year post menopause, when I thought I’d got over the sleep problems and hot sweats, they appeared, along with tinnitus. The palpadations were the reason I went on HRT as they were impacting my ability to exercise (I’d get a muzzy head when bending over).

Another vote for giving up coffee seemingly doing the trick to stop these symptoms. Still drink normal builders tea and the odd coffee at weekends without symptoms.
