Period returned after a year

My last period was around a year ago I think. My last documented one was over a year so the GP said I was post menopausal and put me on continuous HRT a couple of months ago. All good and felt much better.
This last week I’ve been headachey, nauseous at times and my boobs have been hurting plus very tired. Very pre-period like. This morning my period has started. Proper fresh blood, not old spotting type blood. Cramps and feeling sick. I have endometriosis so I really celebrated menopause and now it’s back.
Is this unusual or something that happens? The Gp said any bleeding within the first 6 months of the HRT is fine but after that it needs investigating. This is a proper period though. I did miss my HRT for one night and when on the pill missing one would lead to bleeding so maybe that’s just me.

Do you have a teenage daughter? A friend of mine had this when her daughter started menstruating.

LegoTherapy · 01/08/2025 09:31

I have two teenager daughters but they started their periods many years ago.

Was it around a year ago or more than year ago? ^^

Focus on the guidance which is bleeding for the first 6 months can be normal.

It's also likely you're not post menopausal even if you missed a period for 51 weeks!

If you're under 50 it's quite likely your ovaries are chucking out a few last eggs even with a gap of 11.5 months.

IME it's often best to try HRT as a sequential regime for a year at least as these hiccups with final periods can be alarming yet aren't serious.

Oh OP I have had this I started menopause at 38. I have had ultrasounds of my uterus (to check the thickness of the lining) a hysteroscopy, much more invasive. Now just on pap smears once a year. I see an endocrinologist and would advise you just to tell your GP or whoever is Rxing the HRT so they can check it is nothing nasty.

I’d been on oestrogen gel and progesterone vaginally on a very vague basis as I kept forgetting and was getting palpitations, chest pain, and pain in all my teeth that goes when I take the HRT. I’m awaiting cardiology but it’s gone with the HRT.
I have a vague recollection of a sort of period around my summer holiday last year which was a year ago exactly. I didn’t put it in my tracking app though so the last one I have in the app is April 2024.
I’m seeing the GP on Monday anyway so I’ll mention it.
My boobs feel much better this morning at least. I’d been craving chocolate all week too which is very unusual.
I’m 49.

If you're using combined continuous, that is 1 capsule of Utrogestan daily.
If you've not been using it regularly, every single day, then you may get bleeding.
Depending on how much gel you use each day, the lining may have thickened and be shedding.
But you also might not be post menopause.

Tell your GP.

Is it cause for concern to have randomly returning periods like this or only if you're on HRT? I'm early 50s and didn't have a period from November to April, then skipped to June. I was assuming that was normal towards menopause?

LegoTherapy · 01/08/2025 12:28

GP has responded to the online triage sent earlier to say it’s likely the HRT doing it and not a return of periods. It feels very much like a period though with the sore boobs, tiredness and need for chocolate along with headaches all week. I’m seeing her on Monday so I’ll know more then as to what it’s doing.

And yes, our GP surgery is excellent and normally responds the same day to queries. You can also usually get a same day appointment too.
