Utrogestan for the progesterone tolerant. Any positive experiences?

Good morning!

After several attempts at starting HRT and having issues with Evorel Sequi (progesterone part) and the coil sending me into a jittery anxious mess, I finally had my appointment with the menopause clinic yesterday.

She has told me to start with Evorel 25 patches and continuous Utrogestan. She advised me to take 100mg every day and to try orally first, if I have problems then to change to vaginally.

I have massive anxiety around the progesterone due to my past experiences so I’m looking for some positivity from ladies who have been able to tolerate Utrogestan when they have had issue with other forms!

I have my 25 patch on now and will be taking my first ever Utrogeston tonight. 😬

The doctor I spoke to has said that if I struggle with the progesterone then I can have Tibilone which, from reading about on here, sounds like a great option so I’m happy that I do have another route to go down if I struggle with the Utrogestan.

I'm on continuous Progesterone 100mg, nightly, with Evorel 100mcg patch. Tbh the Progesterone hasn't done anything for me. I'm still waking up every night feeling anxious. I'm so tired😫 Never heard of Tibilone. What is t?

Sorry to hear that 😟 The whole thing is such a minefield! I had to google Tibilone…

Tibolone is a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that contains a synthetic (artificial) hormone. Your body breaks down tibolone to make substances that work in a similar way to the hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

From the experiences I’ve read I’d rather go straight on to it and bypass the Evorel and Utrogestan 😂

I’m sensitive to progesterone & progestogen (artificial forms of progesterone)
I didn’t have a positive experience with Utro, but everyone is different.
I have found Slynd to be really good for me in terms of how I feel mentally & physically. Though I do have breakthrough bleeding & am currently being followed up for a borderline thickened womb lining on it. So I may be back to the drawing board.
My meno specialist has suggested cyclogest but I wasn’t keen because it’s a waxy pessary (ergo likely messy as it melts!) & I’d rather take a tablet.
Utro suits lots of people though, so fingers crossed for you.

I struggle with progesterone however on a 100 mg patch you should have 200mg a night under new guidelines.

Hi

how’s the progesterone going?

I am doing lots of research as I’m in menopause at 42. Currently take 50mg estrogen patch but I think I need progesterone too.

i am already getting digestive issues since hitting menopause and heard it make sit worse. But I’m also early to it, 42. I wondering whether to try the progesterone and up my estrogen to 75mg. I feel like it’s better for long term protection of my health.

gps aren’t so up on it and they seem to just go with whatever I ask for.

I get brain fog but other symptoms have eased. I also get disrupted sleep on busy stressful days such as work days so I’m wondering if I’m lacking in progesterone

@Zenlifeforme Have you had a hysterectomy? (Sorry for such a personal question!) If you still have a uterus, you should be taking progesterone as well as estrogen or you’re increasing your risk of endometrial cancer taking just estrogen.

Zenlifeforme · 21/07/2025 16:25

Yes I am taking the mirena coil to protect uterus. I meant ‘more’ progesterone, doh. It’s the brain fog!

R0ckandHardPlace · 21/07/2025 16:30

I wasn’t too bad on utrogestan despite being progesterone intolerant. (History of PMDD and other forms of progesterone turned me into a basket case - Mirena, mini-pill, etc). I was on a continuous regime with no break. I mostly took Cyclogest but like all forms of HRT there were times that it was unavailable so I’d be given utrogestan instead. I don’t have to take it now as I’ve had a hysterectomy.

2025mustbebetter · 21/07/2025 16:33

I can't use hormonal contraception at all but I'm fine with utrogestan. I am currently on 200mg continuous plus everol 100. I built up to this over a couple of years. I've always done continuous as the 2 week method just left me spiralling in between doses.

Zenlifeforme · 21/07/2025 20:06

Great thanks both ☺️. Are either of these vaginally or both orally?

Casualtysecured · 21/07/2025 20:11

I’m 52, perimenopausal and take 100mg Utrogestan every day and NO oestrogen.

Oestrogel makes me jittery, headachy, uptight and an insomniac, full of aches and pains.

progesterone makes me feel calm, I sleep better. I’m generally better on it.

Casualtysecured · 21/07/2025 20:11

Ought to say i must have enough oestrogen as I still have heavy periods
