Hello. I’m 51 and perimenopausal. I’m 5’3 and feel huge due to bloating and the fabulous meno belly. It’s actually really getting on my nerves as feel yuck. I’m trying to stop alcohol for a while, I do walk etc. There seem to be a million supplements that claim to help- has anyone have anything that helped? Thanks x

No answers I’m afraid, only solidarity. I’m almost 50 and can’t stand the bloating and belly. I’ve started Pilates but not sure it will be enough!

Hoping for answers

46, periods been wonky for 3 years, fading away, hot sweats and belly fat increased. I m intrigued by the symptoms in tandem with the decline of periods.

Tell me about it,.I'm 52, 53 soon and my belly is massive. I try my best to exercise when I can but nothing seems to make any difference.
Been told my motabalisum is that of a 70.yr old woman so I think I'm fighting a losing battle.
Recently had my hormones tested due to never ending period and my fsh levels are through the roof!

Try a probiotic supplement like this.

Cutting out bread (or greatly reducing it) seemed to work for me.

I don't think I've got a wheat/gluten intolerance (possibly a yeast intolerance though) but I read somewhere that you need less carbs generally after menopause and bread has always bloated me, just not to the extent it does now.

Watching with interest as I have the same thing and have also developed lordosis (forward curve of lower spine) which exacerbates the ‘old lady posture’ look. And the bloating…I feel like I’ve got wind constantly. I’m 51, 5’ 1” and I’ve always been supple, slim and had good posture and I don’t feel like myself any more.

I have cut out biscuits and chocolate, but it’s so hard to not give in, so I simply don’t buy them, I’ve been eating apples instead, I have noticed my belly has gone down a bit.

High protein
Low cal
Reduce alcohol
Resistance exercise 3 times a week
Magnesium and K
Vit D
Calcium
Good quality omega oil
Quality Sleep
Collagen supplements help some

I know some who will claim that supplements don't work, expensive pee etc. Supplements work for many many people, are relatively inexpensive and it's very hard to get optimum nutrition from daily food. (Note optimum not NHS levels) For example it's virtually impossible to get optimum levels of choline unless you eat 3 eggs daily for example.

Good luck OP

If you’re bloated you need to see your GP as that is a symptom of ovarian cancer. You prob don’t have ovarian cancer but it’s best to get checked out

Cedrabbage · 19/07/2025 20:14

Lift heavy. Often. Also protein.

JinglingSpringbells · 20/07/2025 08:49

'Bloating' is usually just either wind or constipation.
But as PP says, get it checked out, and do some self-screening online for signs of ovarian cancer.

Weight distribution changes after menopause so fat is stored on the tummy in women.

The only things that work (IME!) are less food, (reduce UPF and carbs), more exercise and healthy moving bowels :)
