First period on HRT and it’s so heavy!! Can I still take Tranexamic acid - is there an increased risk of blood clots?

Yes I was prescribed it whilst on HRT

Passionfloweronthefence · 01/07/2025 13:42

I googled it and it says not recommended because of increased risk on bloody clots and then I found this

I would phone the GP and ask.

I take TA and just started HRT 6 mths ago. GP didn’t say I couldn’t take both and they're both on my repeat prescription still.

My understanding of the posts on Menopause Matters are about breakthrough bleeding, not the withdrawal bleeds on HRT. It shouldn't be used mid-cycle to control bleeding but that's something different.

The blood clot risk (IMO) is for women using estrogen as tablets that carry a small risk of clots but transdermal estrogen doesn't. So the info may be out of date or not specific to transdermal estrogen.

Not a HCP so check with your GP- but they may not know anyway as it's quite a specialist issue.

I took TXA for three months ON HRT until the bleeding settled down. GP prescribed it.
