Peri periods - help!

Sianholby · 29/06/2025 13:46

So I’m in the throes of perimenopause and my periods are unpredictable. For the past few months they have been very heavy - we are talking gushes, leaking through pads, period pants and clothes even with a mooncup or tampon.

I am at a trade show in a couple of weeks - the first I’ve done for a couple of years and my period is due that week. I am paranoid about leaking - at home or in the office is fine but at this trade show, it’s sales focussed so I don’t want to leak in front of customers if we are mid stand walk, meeting or talking to stand visitors.

Anyone got any tips rather than me rushing to the toilet all the time to change myself?

You could try a period delay tablet, such as Norethisterone. I've no experience with it, but it's probably your best bet.

Hello Sianholby, I've read the some women use Norethisterone to delay their periods.

I had exactly the same thing, would sometimes need to put 4 night times towels in (didn't feel nice but did work).

The solution for me was the mini-pill. I have been on it now for years. It gradually stopped my periods and hence the irregularity, flooding and low iron. The only drawback is that I have no idea whether I still actually have periods so I don't know where I am in the menopause. But I haven't had any other symptoms or needed HRT so it has been a God-send!

I was having the same issue, my Dr prescribed tranexamic acid, it worked wonders for the heavy days, I take a couple and it slows right down to the sort of flow I usually get at the end of my period.

Fleurjoy · 01/07/2025 13:46

I use tranexamic acid to reduce my bleeding.I get some erratic periods, heavy, light and heavy for 7-10 days. Correct word 'that' replace 'the'. Sorry, mistake.🙂

Please don't accept this as normal. It could be fibriods (sorry if my spelling is off) get the GP to refer you.

Hi op. Please get it checked out, but in the short term, I would suggest the period delay pills. I've used 2 different medications with no problem when I've wanted to delay periods because of races.

Sianholby · 01/07/2025 16:15

Thank you all! My periods have just gone haywire recently in my late 40s so will go to the GP

When I'm heavy, I wear period pants and a pad. It's the only thing that works for me.

Tranexamic acid worked for me though it did make me feel a bit queasy. Eventually I was referred to gynae and had ablation about 18 months ago which has lightened things up no end. No more big clots or gushes, just smaller of both which are much easier to manage. I don’t like the pill, made me feel awful when I was younger so was offered ablation instead. I’m sure I’m peri but no HRT yet as coping with it all except hot flushes which can be truly dreadful. It’s well worth talking to your GP practise, mine has a women’s health nurse who is so much more knowledgeable.
