Peri ladies w/ Mirena - your stories - the first few months

I’m 41, confirmed Peri. I’m contemplating a Mirena as part of my HRT after 7 months on Oestrodial & Progesterone. i feel better and an sleeping waaay better but my periods remain really random/more frequent, sometimes still terrible, so I’m bit fed up!
I’m wondering how the first few months were for people, and how long it took periods/bleeding to settle if/stop, if at all!
I’m trying to figure out whether to get one before or after a big trip in a few months.
Would be grateful for anyone’s experiences.

Hi , I’m peri too but had the Mirena fitted well before due to endometriosis. My experience has been , no periods , no pain , no side effects it’s been great. I know everyone’s experience is different but it was a game changer for me x

I'd definitely go with Mirena as it's so much easier in the long term. However - I'd not do it before a trip as you don't know how you'll react - and it's not predictable.

Mirena can cause intermittent bleeding/spotting for longer than a normal period, and for a month or two. Or not. No one knows. But as I said - after that you are in the clear and only need your estrogen.

My gyno also said that she believes Mirena is best for medical reasons - as it delivers progesterone directly to the uterus, thus mitigating some of the risks of HRT.

Good luck

I've had mine in for 2 weeks. So far, so good. A bit of spotting that's all.

I’m 54 and had a Mirena fitted 4 years ago as part of my HRT. My periods were still pretty regular and not problematic but I really struggled to remember to take the Utrogestan and, as I am on quite a high oestrogen dose, I wanted to make sure I was getting progesterone consistently.
I had daily spotting for about 6 weeks (although I had been warned it might be as long as 6 months). It was irritating but no more than that. A pantyliner amount, no more. I have been period free for 4 years now and assume I am probably post-menopausal now because of my age but I will have my Mirena replaced next year when it expires as it has suited me very well as a fuss-free way to replace my progesterone.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
I think I will definitely be trying it once I’m back from the travels but for now will just hope I am not bleeding for the majority of the travels as going to be in some really remote places and lots of swimming etc!

I’ve not had any bleeding since the day I had it fitted.

it did send me insane for a month though. Terrible anxiety and insomnia. But then it settled down and now it’s great.

I’ve had a mirena (not the same one 🤣) for over 25 years and never had a period. I’m fully menopausal now, amd habe on e as part of HRT, and no issues ar all

Mine has been great too. Getting it in and out is no picnic but it's been worth it. I need mine replaced but the strings have gone up into my uterus 😬
