Supplements to ease anxiety?

PeoplesRepublic · 11/05/2025 08:38

I'm waking in the night / early morning in a state of panic about all kinds of things.
I got up early today as a result and feel really jittery.
This isn't like me, and although life, work etc is full on, there's no reason for panic. It's all manageable.
I don't typically feel overwhelmed but do at the moment (last year maybe?), over the slightest thing.

Can anyone recommend supplements that have helped ease peri/menopause anxiety?

I've read some reviews but don't know where to start (ha, yes that'll be the overwhelmed feeling again!).

Thanks for any help!

Supplements probably won't help.
Try mindfulness and some of the apps like Headspace (there are loads), maybe some yoga, or there are CBT videos etc online (free.)

Valerian.

I had this but because, like you, I knew it wasn't real i.e. I was okay in the day and it was manageable, I just acknowledged that and put a podcast on and got back to sleep. I got used to waking 2-4ish for a good while and dealing with it that way until I got on HRT and that seems to have stopped the waking. The downside is that I'm tireder all around, but the night panics have gone away.

I take two magnesium at night and they have helped massively

Magnesium, there's been studies on it showing it can lower cortisol levels and help with anxiety and depression.

Magnesium at night
Get up, go for a run, or take up running. Do it early and you’ll reap the endorphins all day
St. Johns Wort or 5HTP
Yoga, mindfulness
Listen to Mel Robbins podcast about anxiety
I find exercise is the best anxiety burner

Sorry you are going through through this. I didn’t take HRT, but do/did get nasty anxiety. When I get it I do lots of small things for myself.

About 6 weeks go I was in a real mess, but then I got a new job, have been really busy and I’ve noticed it’s eased off.

Be kind to yourself. The menopause can be very unpleasant but it can also be a time when you make changes in your life for the better and come out the other end stronger.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate the replies.
I do quite a few of those already - got up instead of staying in bed this morning, did the prep for tomorrow (teacher) instead of worrying when it'll get done, wrote my 'to do' lists, but throughout have that shaky feeling. And exhaustion! I read before sleeping to put a barrier between day-brain and night-brain.
I'll definitely try magnesium. It certainly can't hurt and sounds like it could really help.
@MakingSpaceForJoy thanks for the kind words. It really is rubbish isn't it? I also have a new job starting soon and kept busy preparing which is good.
