Decanting Oestrogel

NicolaCasanova · 10/05/2025 08:46

Why does oestrogen gel (I’m on Oestrogel) have to come in such huge bottles? Has anyone ever seen a mini or travel size one? Presuming not, is it ok to decant some into a smaller container like you would with shampoo etc.?

There is no smaller bottle.
Decanting isn't a great idea because the gel is alcohol based and you risk the alcohol evaporating once it's not in an airtight container (like the bottle it comes in) and it could affect its efficacy.

I've decanted one pump into a small container when I've wanted to apply it if I've been out/away and would otherwise be late with the dose.

If you travel a lot and don't want to use Oestrogel you could consider Sandrena (another type of gel)which comes in sachets.

I’ve decanted for 2 nights away but anything longer I take the whole pump. A travel one would be good but expensive

SelinaPlace · 10/05/2025 09:18

It’s medically-mandated so just bring your prescription?

CardinalCat · 10/05/2025 09:19

I have lenzetto spray which I take when I travel. It’s a much smaller bottle. I don’t generally like it as much as oestrogel, so I rarely use it when home, but I find it better for holidays (it also doesn’t pill under sun cream or in pools!)

NippyNinjaCrab · 10/05/2025 09:24

Mine isn't that big a bottle, also the pumps are measured so I'd be wary if I decanted them into another container I won't get the correct dose.

blubbyblub · 10/05/2025 09:27

Is there a reason people who travel a lot don’t just get prescribed Sandrena? I e never tried the pump one as I was prescribed Sandrena from the get go.

All the bottles are the same. 80mls.

No!

I've used Oestrogel for years and my consultant did ask me once if I'd like some Sandrena if I travelled a lot (I don't) as it would be less to pack.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 10/05/2025 10:02

The bottle itself is big but still under 100ml so fine for flights

TerrifiedPassenger · 10/05/2025 12:51

I took mine in hand luggage with a copy of my prescription, got waved through - it was in addition to the 100ml allowances/all in a clear bag.

Travelling through Manchester recently and you don't even need to take out liquids.

NicolaCasanova · 10/05/2025 13:57

Sorry, it’s not for travelling on aéroplanes etc.

Just for convenience like staying at a friend’s place.

Are you worried your friend will see it and you're trying to keep it confidential?

What do you mean?

I mean it’s a prescription drug. It doesn’t need to fit in your single clear plastic bag with your liquids. Just bring something to show it’s prescribed, not face serum.

And yes, the bottles (of mine anyway) are under 100 ml, but my point is that you don’t need to cram it into your plastic bag with your foundation, toothpaste etc, if you’re bringing it in hand luggage.

OP isn't going overseas or flying. That wasn't the reason for her post. :)

Yes. Which she said several hours after I posted that.

No it’s just too big and heavy to lug around everywhere.

OP posts:
JinglingSpringbells · 12/05/2025 18:40

Maybe consider Sandrena or patches?

NicolaCasanova · 12/05/2025 18:51

patches are no longer used in the country where I live.

Thanks to everyone for advice.

I e-mailed the Gynacologist today and he said it’s fine to do it for a night or two as long as it’s into a clean réceptacle.
