Can I start Utrogeston gradually?

Prescribed 2 pumps oestrogel and 200mg ultrogestan but having read some horror stories on here would like to start with 100mg and increase after a week or so. Would I be ok to do this?

No, it can be dangerous to do this. Oestrogen with insufficient progesterone can cause problems. Just take as prescribed and ignore horror stories - the vast majority of people are fine.

VinoWitch · 07/05/2025 06:52

Ok thank you, will do

I take it with the same prescription as you and I’ve had no side effects at all. I have found if I forget to take it, I get awful indigestion? But when I take it as prescribed, I’m fine.

VinoWitch · 07/05/2025 06:59

That’s good to know, hopefully I’ll be fine. I’ve come across so many off putting stories about side effects and weight gain that I’m feeling nervous about starting the utrogestan. So appreciate more positive feedback!

Does it cause weight gain? I've definitely put on weight and I'm on both. Having said that, I understand that the progesterone prevents your womb lining becoming overly thickened thus preventing cancer. So I can see the benefits. It's also helpful for sleep.

If you want to try reducing the dose, the only way to do that is to continue the progesterone part slightly longer. So if you do half a dose for one week, you should do a few extra days of the full dose.

I would add that no, I didn’t and haven’t put on any weight since starting it and in fact have been gradually losing weight since I’ve been on it (don’t think that’s the meds, I’ve improved my diet and exercise more)

I was nervous after hearing horror stories on here too but in all honesty I actually feel better on my progesterone part of my cycle. I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis as well and I find I ache less when taking progesterone, plus my sleep is amazing. Hopefully you'll not have any side effects either.

LimesGoddess · 16/05/2025 10:09

Like MuffinMan I also feel much better on the progesterone part, when it’s over and it’s just oestrogen I actually feel a little teary. Exactly the opposite to what I expected, but having spoken to my GP I understand some women are progesterone positive and it turns out I’m one of them :)

that said I take mine vaginally which avoids a whole heap of side effects and means I don’t have to worry about when I take them or food etc. I still insert them at night anyway as much easier to then go to bed, but as it bypasses the liver not half the side effects whoo

Just wondering how you got on with the ultrogesten OP? I’m just starting out and also nervous about side affects based on some of the posts here

Sorry this is old but I just wondered does using it vaginally cause any mess?

VinoWitch · 20/01/2026 20:03

@AnxietyCam I had no problem at all with the utrogestan. I take it for 12 days on and 12 days off. No noticeable side effects

No - I wear a panty liner those nights and maybe get a little white chalky discharge, but that’s it.

Thanks for replying! I have now taken it 4 nights so far, no noticable side affects either thankfully. Although, i feel bit emotional today, not sure if thats the utro or not.

Another chiming in to say I’ve had no side effects. I take 200mg orally and cyclically; sleep so much better on it and less flushing in the luteal phase when on it. It did increase my hunger the first few days but that wore off quickly.
