Aching joints- will they stop hurting if I lose weight?

I do need to. I’m reducing calories and time restricting my food, and I’m making a conscious effort to increase my activity levels as much as possible. So that’s in my immediate future.

But what I’m struggling with now is really sore hips and lower back. Now this has come on quite recently- my back has played up from time to time since I herniated a disc a couple of years ago, although that resolved well by itself- but it’s currently not feeling better even with yoga (normally helps it) and my hips-! I’ve never had sore hips before. Again, they loosen up and are ok but if I stop moving in the day, and first thing in the morning and in the evenings, it’s really quite painful. I’ve also got a bit of stiffness or twinges of pain in my elbows for no good reason, but it’s mild and I can avoid noticing it.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? What could be causing it? I think it’s over the last 6 weeks, about the same time or just after I started HRT, but I haven’t done any unusual activity- have had weeks of movement and a rest week last week, but neither seem to make a difference. It’s just getting worse. And I’ve been heavy for much longer!

HRT made some difference but losing weight means I don’t have any aches and pains any more in my hips, shins and back. I have always exercised, including doing stretching and Pilates.

I used mounjaro to lose weight and the joint pain stopped. Stopped mounjaro and the joint pain re-started. BALLS. I guess it was the anti-inflammatory effect rather than the weight loss.

@Wayhome depends on all sorts of things including starting weight, build etc so ‘how much have you lost’ isn’t really relevant… BUT I can’t imagine that any amount of weight loss will affect the pain in my elbows!

Edited

As you can see from the posts on this very thread about posters joint pain clearing up once they’d lost weight.

But you asked how much weight I’ve lost. Maybe a better question would be has the pain improved at all with some weight loss, are you still bigger than you’d want to be, etc. Those are also less intrusive questions to be honest, as well as more useful.

the answers would be no, in fact it’s got worse; and yes, I’m continuing to eat more mindfully and wisely than I was before so I would expect to see a bit more weight loss.

I was diagnosed with OA just before turning 40. I was in pain then and also in pain now ( wasn't overweight at the time). For some losing weight helps, for others it makes no difference.

Hopefully you find a solution to help you OP. Painkillers are what helps me through each day.

Pilates is a great help with this, I find.

Yes Google Jessica hip pain Pilates. Only takes 5 mins

Are you now overweight @user1476613140 ? If so, have you found it’s made your joint pain worse?

The pain is the same. Not worse. Just agony most days unless I have my regular painkillers.

I doubt I would need to take painkillers as much if I was allowed to rest but having a busy family denies me that luxury unfortunately.

I had limited success with pilates. But I think once schools go back I will get back to it. It won't worsen the situation.

I would try collagen and omega 3s. Lots of collagen products so ideally you want hydrolyzed with vit c.
