I started with my menopause 3years ago and I’m on HRT.
One of the symptoms I complained about was being itchy ‘down there’
This itching has never stopped and is bad at bed time. I scratch so much that my skin has bled on occasion nand is constantly sore.
i have talked to various doctors about this. On examination they say they can see I have been scratching but there doesn’t seem to be any skin condition causing it.
i ave in the past been given creams but the itcjphing has never stopped. It is driving me crazy,Any advice before my next doctors appointment in May please.

Could be the start of lichen sclerosis

FunnyCradock · 13/04/2025 15:17

Itching was a symptom of VA for me. It went away with regular use of vagirux pessaries & estriol cream externally. (I’m also on systemic HRT).

I second Lichen Sclerosis- mine started in perimenopause and it nearly drove me crazy!! See another Dr if you can and question if it could be that x

Could be the start of lichen sclerosis
I have no idea as I’ve haven’t heard of that. I have googled it.
i have seen nurses and doctors over the last three years and they have just gave me an emollient for the scratching.
It tends to be bad first thing in the morning and before I go to sleep.

@NotaCoolMum
Have you been treated successfully for it? If so what was the treatment?
iI’m at the end of my tether with it, I'm in so much discomfort.

It could just be vaginal atrophy, oestrogen cream should help. You can buy Gina over the counter if you’ll struggle to get your gp to prescribe it but most gps seem to be very happy with it. I had about 5 rounds of treatment for thrush before someone twigged, the cream fixed it no problem

TinyRebel · 13/04/2025 15:41

I had this for a while and it just went away on its own. Remember feeling just as desperate as you. I tried Trimovate cream occasionally (magic stuff) and washed with E45, cetraben or similar emollient creams and it just seemed to eventually go away on its own. Hasn’t flared up again since starting HRT, so could be hormone related?

Has no-one given you vaginal oestrogen, despite you being at menopause, repeatedly complaining of itching and vaginal atrophy basically being universal in women after menopause?

Some women find HRT is enough, others need vaginal oestrogen as well.

notacooldad · 13/04/2025 15:53

I’m currently taking Ovsestin
Progestrone 100mg and Evorel 75 patches.

You need to try vaginal oestrogen.

I have just been prescribed estradial/ topical estrogen cream with applicator to put inside. I have had insane itching and now swollen labia. I went to sexual health clinic and had examination. They gave me clean bill of health although they said due to menopause I’m dry inside. Since then it has got worse. I saw a doc but she just said to use moisturis8ng pessaries so started that but it didn’t stop the intense itching. Now on after see8ng a different doc I am on 3rd application of the estrogen cream and waiting for the results of swabs she did to check if there is any thrush etc. The sexual health clinic decided there was no thrush as it looked dry. But the doctor said you can have thrush after the menopause and have no discharge etc
I have found the best thing to relieve discomfort is taking lukewarm
bath to soothe genital area. I bought some general cream for irritation of vulval area but am undecided if it helps.
