Will anything help me to sleep in later than 4am??

@Iloveflapjack1 I’ll try the milk. Unfortunately getting out of bed would wake the dogs and then I wouldn’t be allowed to go back to bed!

@Augustus40 thank you, I’ll have a look.

I have the same problem, Including the dogs.
I take magnesium gummies at bedtime as well as putting magnesium gel on my legs. That works some nights to make me sleep through.

I buy Melatonin on the internet (reputable source) and keep it by my bed. I find just 2 or 3 mg at 3/4am will make me sleep through until 7/8am without making me groggy.

I occasionally take 2 sleep ease tablets when I feel I’ve not had enough sleep over a few nights.

This is the one thing HRT fixed overnight for me. It imporved everything else after a few weeks, but the early waking stopped immediately.

Chewbecca · 17/04/2025 20:10

Yes, HRT resolved this issue pretty much instantly for me too.

Cookiebix · 17/04/2025 20:12

Sorry I saw 4am waking and assumed menopause because it seems to be a very common symptom.

I used to have awful sleep but have cracked it now. I take 25mg Amitriptyline before bed (prescribed by my GP). Then when I go to bed read my kindle for about 15/20 min. Not a page turner but fairly easy/gentle read. Then I listen to a ‘bedtime story for grownups’ podcast, usually Nothing Much Happens (which I found out about form MN). If I wake up in the night I put the podcast on again. I rarely get to the end of the story. I also have sleep focus set up on my Apple Watch so text/Whatsapp etc alerts don’t bother me after a set time. And I track my sleep with the watch as well which helps.

HRT worked for me. Went from ridiculously early waking to sleeping through. Transformative.

Summertimeblahness · 17/04/2025 22:39

As this is the only symptom at the moment (other than no periods) would HRT be recommended?

@Cookiebix don’t apologise, definitely menopausal related!

@SomewhereInMyHeart I’ve heard of this podcasts, I’ll try it tonight. (Having a late night tonight up past 8!). I can’t sleep with my watch on but everything is muted and blacked out. No passing traffic, no street lights, just my bloody body!

@workingcocker I can’t take gummies unfortunately but will look at the gel. Where do you get the melatonin from?

I took nytol last night as I’m exhausted and slept until 6:45!

Biovea for melatonin.

I only chose gummies as I sometimes forget to bring a drink to bed and ended up not taking it.

Hayfever meds help with sleep

Hillsaremyhappyplace · 17/04/2025 23:38

The only thing that made a difference to my early waking was HRT. Once I started it I realised I had been suffering from low level anxiety and just felt better overall once I started taking it (as well as my sleep improving).

Yes b3 helped me a lot but I did take a higher dose than the bottle recommended. It said online 300mg or 400 mg was safe.

After a few years it was giving me headaches. Now post menopause I take 500 mg magnesium oxide an hour before bed. Lindens brand. Total game changer but can cause fatigue so one night a week I skip it.
