Mirena Coil instead of Utrogestan due to progesterone sensitivity?

My gp suggested I switch from taking utrogestan to the Mirina coil. I'm very sensitive to utrogestan. It gives me headaches and I feel really tired and moody on it.
I switched to taking it vaginally and is definitely bit of an improvement, but I still suffer from side effects. I'm a little bit reluctant to switch to the mirina in case I get bad side effects from that too and then have to go through the the hassle of having it removed.
Has anyone any experience of this? good or bad?
thanks

I’ve done this. I’ve always struggled with progesterone- don’t get along with a lot of contraceptive pills, terrible PMS etc and Utrogestan made me seriously depressed.

I’m fine on Mirena (I used to use it for contraception too). It is a lower dose and only works locally on your womb rather than rattling round your whole body.

It IS absorbed into your system at a low level. This is why some women have side effects like acne for example.

@AreWeThereYet69 You can only try- many women love it, others hate it- just like Utrogestan. The guidance is try it for 3 months then have it removed (takes 5 mins someone posted recently) if it's not suiting you.

I am very very sensitive to certain progesterones - the mirena was an absolute nightmare for me.

I hated utrogestan. I really hated mirena. Tried norethisterone which was ok. But now much better on Slynd (drospirenone) POP which also works as contraception. Am 50 but still having periods sometimes despite being on a continuous HRT regime. I have always been better on a continuous regime, the up/down cyclical regime was awful for me. I used to also take the combined pill without a break - for this same reason.

I can’t take utrogestan and I don’t want the coil so I am on the mini pill and have evorel conti patches as well. Works brilliantly for me.

FunnyCradock · 12/04/2025 23:25

@Pigeonqueen same here! Evorel conti plus the mini pill.
Though I’ve finally settled on a crazy regime - 2 conti patches + 1 x 75mcg estradiol patch plus the mini pill - Slynd (plus testosterone). It’s been a journey! At one point I thought I was going to end up being more patch than person. I’m a poor transdermal absorber apparently.
I was on the Noriday mini pill but a shortage of it at Xmas meant I accidentally discovered that Slynd works better for me.

Progesterone sensitivity has been a nightmare for me so I hope this gives some positivity to other women going through the same - you can find the right regime for you. It took a while, but I now finally understand when people say HRT is life changing.

Consider taking a bioidentical progesterone in a topical form. You’ll absorb more than the pills and might have less side effects. Also worth a google at the difference between bio identical progesterone and progestins (the coil and ‘the pill’) and how the side effects can differ.

Thank you...lots of info in these responses. I'll need to do a bit of goggling. I've never heard of Slynd or realised there was bioidentical progesterone!!

@AreWeThereYet69 I had never heard of slynd either! I am on Northisterine. After years on utrogestan I persuaded the gp to switch things up.
I am mostly fine on it. I get some months when I feel bloated etc but wither when there are no side effects.
I think I will give slynd a go if I can persuade them to prescribe it!

WhoAreYouTalkingTo · 13/04/2025 09:35

The Mirena coil gave me BV continually. It was awful. I'm highly sensitive to the mini pill and just using vagifem at the moment, but suffering from such bad bloating that I keep getting asked if I'm pregnant! I'm not sure what to try next tbh
