Fatty liver anyone?

NewPlumCat · 03/04/2025 12:42

I've had an ultrasound a couple of weeks ago to rule out digestive issues and other organs were also checked. My GP has told me I have a fatty liver. I am absolutely terrified and am having panic attacks.
I don't know how it could have happened as I eat very healthy and small portions. I don't eat, sugary foods or fried foods and use olive oil in my cooking. I don't eat white bread, or white pasta. I use wholemeal bread and pasta, I use wholemeal pasta and have it once in a couple of months.
I am 3 years postmenopausal as well.

Any help and advice on this will be really appreciated x

I was diagnosed with this, and managed to reverse it by losing 20 kilos. I took it seriously as I am on a lot of medication for auto immune disorder and have to be careful with my liver health.

As you are also Type 2 diabetes, I would imagine weight loss would make a huge difference

I had exactly the same - noticed with an ultrasound for something else.
my GP just shrugged and said a lot of menopausal women have it and moved on. I’d forgotten about it until I saw this thread! I’m -probably a stone and a half fatter than I should be, I’d imagine that’s the cause!

Thank you for your message. Are you feeling better now? Has it gone away? x keeping you in prayers 🙏 God bless you 🙏 ❤️

I was diagnosed 10 years ago, never took it seriously, gained more weight (morbid obesity level) and haven’t suffered any effects to date. I have lost weight recently and am no longer in that category.

Thank you for your message and letting me know. I'm glad you are feeling better now. Has the fatty liver gone away ?

Thank you for your message. How long have you had a fatty liver for? x

It was picked on ultrasound in 2012 while looking kidney stones or ovarian cyst.

I got diagnosed with mild non alcoholic fatty liver disease in January. I had a blood test and my alt levels were high, so I got sent for a scan. It was a bit of a surprise, as my bmi was 18, I exercise and ate a fairly healthy vegetarian diet and very rarely drink.

GP wasn’t concerned and just said to watch my diet.

l’ve made changes as I don’t want it to progress, reduced fat, carbs and sugar. However I’m losing too much weight, so not sure what to do now.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I pray it gets better completely for you 🙏 please don't worry too much. Your doing the right thing and eating less and healthy and losing weight and keeping an eye on it. So hopefully it will be completely reversed. God bless you with good health and a long happy and healthy life Ameen 🙏

I have the same due to a less than great lifestyle. My GP said it's very common at out age (assuming you're 50+ ish) and can be improved by losing some weight. Absolutely not something to panic about.

Thank you for replying. How long have you had it for and is it better now?

I wouldn't let it stress you too much. Just keep eating well and start taking more walks. It's spring, the weather will be good for a while, get out and wander more. Maybe do the occasional HIT (quick bursts of intensive exercise) to get your metabolism going. Spoonful of apple cider vinegar with dinner helps burn fat too apparently.

It's fine, you'll be fine!

Thank you for your lovely message. I really appreciate all your support and reassurance. Its very kind of you 🙏

God bless you and your family ultimately 🙏 ❤️

A doctor friend of mine told me the liver function test is set deliberately low so nearly everyone fails it - it's a quick, cheap way to improve the nation's health - everyone panics and cuts down on their alcohol intake/improves their diet. I wouldn't worry - just lose a bit of weight via healthier eating and up your exercise. Job done.

Thank you for replying. I really appreciate it. I'm Very worried about it. I can't stop worrying about it and worst case scenarios are totally overwhelming me. I've cut out tea, Fruit, and organic porridge. i am not eating very much at all. I'm starving myself to the point that I almost feel sick.

@NewPlumCat This thread is going the same way as your others on HRT and Menopace. It's going round in circles.
You might get more help from the Mental Health board so you can talk through ways of getting help for your anxiety. I think your GP needs to refer you to a specialist for support on all of this. You've already mentioned that you've had some support from your GP for that so maybe that's the best way forward? It would also help if you could talk to someone in real life, to share your worries.

You might be better off posting this in General Health as it's not a menopause issue

I read recently that women in peri and or menopause are 2.4 times more likely to get NAFLD. Low oestrogen was mentioned. Low oestrogen also contributes to weight gain.

FeatherChops · 06/04/2025 09:41

Do you post a lot about health issues? I recognise your posting style and the ‘god bless you’s etc’

I posted that in the context the OP's other threads here which she started around a week ago, where she discussed menopause and possible ways to help, and she received a lot of support and advice.

Read up about healthy foods for the liver. Coffee is good for it. And the liver can heal itself.
so basically a Mediterranean diet, plenty of fluids, a coffee a day, exercise etc.

Thank you for replying and your support. Yes I agree with you. I should have gone on HRT but I wasn't to know that menopause is the reason for this. I've been prescribed micoronised progesterone (tablet) and estrogen patched last week and I'm not sure if I can take the tablet due to the fatty liver? x

Stomach ulcers are not diagnosed by ultrasound. They are diagnosed by an endoscopy. If you had issues with your stomach, a camera down the throat is the way to see anything going on although sometimes an ultrasound is done in addition (but not on its own.)

You would also usually have to have some risks factors for fatty liver like a history of alcohol use or being obese rather than just a bit overweight.

Presumably your GP has reassured you and given advice on what to do next?
They know how you have health anxiety so it's down to them to advise you.

People can have an endoscopic ultrasound.

You need to talk to your GP about HRT.

If they gave you your liver results at the same time as HRT (or so it seems from your posts) then surely they would have advised you?

The last time you posted on HRT, last week, you said you had some leftover patches that you were afraid to use. Posters advised you to ask for a different sort of HRT.

You didn't say you'd been to your GP and got them. Your last post on that thread said you'd 'Have to live like this forever' (suffering with meno symptoms because you were too afraid to use HRT.)

And you didn't say you were under investigations for your stomach. (You presumably would have known that when you started your other threads, because referrals take weeks or months for non-urgent things.)

It's difficult to know how all of this hangs together. You need to talk to your GP because none of us know what's going on with your liver, or why, and the extent of it.

You also (kindly) need to ask for support with your mental health. Cutting out the foods you've mentioned and going into 'starvation' is not healthy behaviour.

Choughinthemist · 06/04/2025 10:50

Gosh quite stalky above. If op wants to ask about that surely she would have.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/04/2025 10:56

The liver is an amazing organ and can recover from even pretty severe disease. Carry on with your healthy lifestyle, cut out alcohol, exercise and lose the excess weight.

Bet if you’re scanned again in a year it will have greatly improved.
