A friend suggested magnesium supplements for leg cramps and better sleep. Interested to know experiences and if this works or is it yet another menopause marketing thing. TIA

I have just bought some to try and help with my sleep but I am not sure when I should take it!

InSpainTheRain · 11/03/2025 21:04

Apparently it's 30 mins to 1 hour before you want to go to sleep. I also bought some and had to google it to find out. Good luck!

@SilverGlitterBaubles Magnesium is a menopause must-have! It helps with sleep, anxiety, hormone balance, bone health, and muscle relaxation.

🕒 When to take it?
🌙 Before bed – for better sleep and relaxation.

🍽 With meals – to support digestion and energy levels.

💡 Bedt types:Magnesium glycinate (for sleep & stress) or citrate (for digestion & muscle cramps).

It also supports the production of oestrogen and progesterone, which naturally decline during menopause.

Helps with heart and bone health. Anxiety relief and mood stabiliser.

A simple way to feel calmer, sleep better, and support your body through menopause! Lots of other supplements that assist with menopause symptoms so you can create your own menopause stack. X

Try a spray applied directly to crampy legs, the effect is more or less immediate. Alternatively, bathe in epsom salts before bed.

Thanks for the info @InSpainTheRain and @Menoglow

I need to remember to take mine a few times through the day by the looks of it.

I’m not yet menopausal but it really helps with my sleep and restless legs. I’ve experimented and 4pm is the best time for me. If I take it too close to bed time, it makes me more awake and if I take it in the morning, I’m sleepy by the time I’ve finished work.

Menoglow · 12/03/2025 08:14

Also for you ladies with restless legs have you tried tonic water? It has quinine in it which they do in medication form which is amazing for restless legs. Also another drug is Pramipexole if it’s really bad and effecting your quality of life. X

SilverGlitterBaubles · 12/03/2025 19:19

For me it is leg and foot cramps rather than restless legs and the 3-4am wake ups with my mind wandering and racing leaving me exhausted that day. I am trying it this evening and will report back.

Yes it does help, BUT I am a full advocate for HRT for anyone. I did all of the natural/holistic/alterative things before finally going on hormones and now I wish I had not waited. I have my life and body back.

Poddywod · 12/03/2025 19:24

My friend uses Sweet Bee Magnesium butter that she rubs into her lower legs every night, she swears it helps her sleep and reduces leg cramps. She didn't like the oily residue that the spray left, so that's why she switched to the butter.

Localher0 · 12/03/2025 19:26

I've been taking it for about a year and it's really helped with my sleep. I get very achy legs at night. I was told that Mg glycinate is kinder on your tummy and that Mg citrate can cause tummy upsets. I didn't know per PP that they're good for different things......

Juicyapple44 · 12/03/2025 19:36

I can recommend magnesium I use the one from nutrition geeks, it has really helped my sleep, calms my brain etc.

Lottapianos · 12/03/2025 19:42

'Yes it does help, BUT I am a full advocate for HRT for anyone'

Couldn't agree more, if you can take it. Nothing else will replace the depleting hormone levels in perimenopause

I do take magnesium glycinate and before I started HRT, it had a positive effect on sleep and restless legs

FoolishHips · 12/03/2025 19:54

I take magnesium glycinate. Not sure whether it works. The stuff you spray on your skin seems to keep me awake.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 12/03/2025 19:58

HRT has helped me in some ways but the night waking and leg cramps seems to be an issue.

I have started taking a capsule of magnesium glycerinate in the evening due to poor sleep pattern and I would recommend as i am sleeping better, have had for past 2 weeks.

Nets888 · 12/03/2025 20:06

I've had bad restless legs but after taking magnesium supplement I don't get it anymore. Definitely works for me. I sleep a bit better too but some nights I still stay awake.

Rowgtfc72 · 12/03/2025 20:11

What sort of strength magnesium glycinate are people taking?
Am managing on 3-4 hrs sleep a night at the minute.
