Peri/ferritin/IBS/B12/anxiety...where to start?

I'm so confused!

I turned 40 in October. A few months prior I was having some dizzy spells and a tingling feeling in my face. This progressed to include heart palpitations and nausea. I felt really unwell. Periods very heavy with huge clots (up to 10 cm). Wondered whether this was perimenopause or something else.

Went to GP and they did some bloods and I did a 24hr ECG. Bloods showed low ferritin (12) but everything else fine. Internal ultrasound showed 'bulky uterus' but nothing sinister.

Just before I started taking iron tablets, I had an episode of severe nausea and dizziness that triggered a panic attack whilst I was driving on the motorway. Thought I was dying and called an ambulance. I'm mortified looking back at this (ambulance guys were amazing but must have thought I was an idiot).

Started on high strength iron tablets in September. This seemed ok at first but then set off months of IBS, diarrhoea and vomiting even after I stopped taking them.

GP has put me on propanolol to deal with the anxiety that has remained since the original panic attack. She dismissed HRT as an option but has prescribed Yasmin to 'level out my hormones' - I haven't taken it yet as unconvinced (admittedly based on googling). I'm waiting for a coeliac test to see if that is the cause of the tingling and diarrhea.

I seemed to really turn a corner after Christmas and felt almost back to normal, but suddenly the tingling is back with a vengeance, I'm dizzy and exhausted. My shoulder hurts, I've got neck pain at the back of my skull sometimes really severe, I've developed jaw pain and started grinding my teeth at night giving me headaches. My skull feels 'tight' all the time over my cheekbones.

I don't know whether to try a different type of iron but I can't do another round of months of IBS, when I've looked at my symptoms it could be B12 deficiencies (my bloods were ok but I was actively supplementing at the time which I understand can cause issues with testing. I've cut out alcohol, caffeine and sugar. I'm scared of taking a load of supplements incase they make things worse. GP seems unconcerned generally.

Don't really know what I'm asking but I'm so fed up and if anyone has any wisdom I would so appreciate it.

Whats your haemoglobin level?
Have you tried puashing your GP for an iron infusion? It sounds like you can't tolerate tablets.
If the GP refuses, could you afford to go private? It's usually around £700.

Mine cost £800 but it was worth it.

Maybe make a note of symptoms as your cycle goes along and see if there is a pattern? Have you considered HRT?

I've been tracking but there's no real pattern I can see yet, except that most symptoms are worst after ovulation.

Today I have had such bad neck and joint pain. I feel like I'm 80, not 40!

Quick update for anyone interested -
GP continued to insist IBS and no further investigation needed.
I've recently got private healthcare through work so have got an appointment lined up with a gastro consultant to see if IBS is the right diagnosis.
In the meantime I've had an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound that I paid for, for peace of mind really as I was worried about gallstones and/or ovarian cysts (due to location of various pains). All clear except for my uterus which shows signs of adenomyosis - something that a previous ultrasound had indicated but the GP said was not clinically significant.
So I'm going to send the ultrasound report to the GP and ask for a referral to gynae.
Still having ongoing digestive symptoms and pain, but the adenomyosis could potentially be the cause.
Either way I'm so relieved the ultrasound didn't find anything horrific and I feel a lot less anxious, for now at least!
