What could it be? GP said call back Monday if tranexamic acid doesn't work, which it hasnt. I'm so scared!!

Don’t be scared, periods often go haywire at this point. I thought i was haemorrhaging one time!
And I had tingling up my arms, convinced myself I had MS, but it was low ferritin due to the bleeding. And anaemia can cause heavy bleeding.
I got the mirena coil to sort mine out.

WhatTheKey · 15/02/2025 15:40

I've been told that this is quite normal with peri. Admittedly, I do find it weird that losing quite so much blood is just accepted as normal- I'm bleeding heavily for about 22/23 days out of every 30.

Enigma52 · 15/02/2025 15:41

Maybe a fibroid? Thickened womb lining? Cyst? You will need to try to slow this bleeding down, as you will become anaemic. How are your periods normally? Are you in pain? X

RosaLappe · 15/02/2025 15:44

Not in pain just cramps. Up till now have been fairly regular still.

How can I tell if I'm anemic? And why would the tranexamic acid nof work?

Bleeding heavily for three weeks every month is definitely not a normal part of perimenopause and should really be investigated.

Periods becoming somewhat irregular, bleeding becoming heavier or lighter.... that's pretty common in the years preceding menopause.

OP, I agree with @Enigma52 - heavy bleeding needs to be addressed as could be any number of things besides perimenopause.

muchadoaboutnuttin · 15/02/2025 18:28

@CulturalNomad I tied to get it investigated, was told it was normal. Have bled for up to six weeks at a time.

Enigma52 · 15/02/2025 19:38

No, that much bleeding for that length of time, could be harmful. Symptoms of anaemia include fatigue and lack of energy. Be careful.

I'm not sure why TXA wouldn't work, but it may be worth requesting a pelvic scan, to see what (if) anything is going on. Periods can change during peri, but that length of bleeding isn't good. Maybe a coil would help to control it? Definitely push for a scan i would.

trainedopossum · 15/02/2025 20:10

Have they checked for fibroids? I bled 5 to 6 days a week for 6 months before they were found and removed during a hysteroscopy.
Much sympathy, it's miserable.

Andtheworldwentwhite · 15/02/2025 20:13

I wouldn’t worry too much just yet. For the last few years my periods have lasted for months on end. Been checked a few times and nothing wrong. Sadly it’s the way it is now.

PauliesWalnuts · 15/02/2025 20:17

Could be a fibroid (even a small one can cause chaos) or something called adenomyosis which I’ve just been diagnosed with. Neither are life threatening and can be treated with a myomectomy, endometrial ablation and/or the Mirena.

Physiologicalmalfunction · 15/02/2025 20:21

Yes get it looked at.

I am peri and had weeks and weeks of bleeding a few times. The first time it was polyps which they removed and I was fine for a couple of years. This time they've spotted small fibroids so just waiting for gynae to check the pictures.

You don't need to put up with constant bleeding.

If you become anaemic you'll find yourself losing your energy easily, exhausted, cold, faint, dry nails and hair, pale.

Take spatone, floradix and vitD till they find out what's causing it.

RosaLappe · 15/02/2025 22:47

Thank you - feel less scared but will call gp Monday first thing

I use TXA and it doesn't stop the bleeding, but calms it down so it's more manageable (in other words, I can go out without fear of flooding!)

Bloody miserable isn't it - pardon the pun!

helene123 · 17/02/2025 23:42

i had this. It was awful working full time whilst trying to manage all the bleeding. Referred to the gynaecologist and had an endometrial ablation procedure plus mirena coil. No more bleeding, which was amazing. But it’s only a suitable procedure if you are finished having children.

Seekinginfolady · 29/03/2025 08:07

I'm experiencing this OP. Second period where the bleeding won't stop. I had a scan and apparently nothing abnormal seen. Perimenopause and hormone related. I'm on the mini pill now but I haven't seen any improvement yet. I also started tranexamic acid. Day three of that today and it's seemingly doing nothing.

What you are experiencing could be perimenopause but for peace of mind, you should get a scan done. Wishing you all the best and if you get the chance, update us on what's happening. Take care.

Sunwarddangledhardens · 29/03/2025 08:25

I experienced this a few years ago and was passing so much blood (and huge clots) that I was genuinely concerned about blood loss. I called 111 and got a call back from a doctor who told me to double up on the tranexamic acid, which worked. Obviously, I’m NOT suggesting you do that! But a call to 111 might be in order.

JinglingSpringbells · 29/03/2025 08:32

Date of OP's post was 6 weeks ago so I'd assume she's okay now or got help.
