Hi , my meno Dr has recommended that I have flaxseed , do any of you eat it ? I was reading on a post here that only the best should be bought and kept in the fridge , isn’t the ground supermarket flaxseed just as good ?

I buy the ground seed from the health food store and keep it in the fridge. I mix it in a jar with protein powder and psyllium husk and add to yogurt or porridge.
Out of curiosity why did your doctor recommend it?

pompey38 · 06/02/2025 19:25

Flaxseed may help reduce the intensity of menopause symptoms , I very much doubt it but if you’re willing to try it won’t do any harm in fact it may help your digestion

Jellycat70 · 06/02/2025 19:41

Thankyou for the replies she recommended it for digestion and my hair .

I have been eating it since peri because I heard the same.

It is much cheaper to buy it whole and grind it as you eat it in a coffee grinder.

I grind 3 dessert spoonfuls and sprinkle it on my porridge with blackcurrants and almonds.

savoycabbage · 06/02/2025 20:38

I get it from Aldi, ground. I keep it in a jar next to the jam on the table and then people add it to their cereal or smoothies etc.

I used to give it to my children for their Afro hair and they call it 'horse medicine' because someone told them when they were little that they gave it to their horse for a shiny coat.

Jellycat70 · 06/02/2025 21:21

I think I’ll buy some at the supermarket the Dr has recommended that I cut out refined sugar and to eat more nuts and lentils

I buy it ground from Lidl, it’s in a releasable pouch & I keep it in the cupboard.
it has definitely slowed down my hair loss, I notice it starts falling out more on holiday after not having any for 6 days plus

Jellycat70 · 06/02/2025 21:36

My mum is a nutritionist and recommends I put flaxseed in my smoothies for hormonal balance. From google - Flaxseed contains lignans, which are phytoestrogens that can affect estrogen metabolism and hormone levels.

comeondover · 06/02/2025 22:15

The oil in the seeds goes rancid very easily, so it's much better to buy the seeds and grind them when you're about to use them. I mix them with ground pumpkin and sunflower seeds and make crackers

mikado1 · 06/02/2025 22:18

My hair is in super condition and I eat two tablespoons a day. I grind it and keep it in a container in the fridge, where it keeps for a few weeks. The wholeseed keeps for a few months in the cupboard but make sure to refrigerate once milled. I put it on yoghurt/overnight oats/granola bars.

That's what I do. I have a large jar of primarily flaxseed but I add turmeric, chia seeds, sunflower seeds etc. Then I put a big spoonful in my morning smoothie with banana, frozen fruit etc.

ThePoshUns · 06/02/2025 22:26

I have a jar with flax and chia seeds mixed that I sprinkle a large spoonful of onto my porridge. I can't say I've noticed that it does anything in particular but I live in hope.

Hemlocked · 06/02/2025 22:34

I bought the ihardig spice mill from IKEA (like a pepper grinder basically) and I put whole flax seeds in there and then grind them over my porridge every morning. It has made a huge difference to my digestion /IBS symptoms.

If you buy it ground then you need to keep it in the fridge

It's inexact. Equal amounts of each seed, say 1/2 cup each - grind and put in a mixing bowl. Now's a good time to add any herbs or spices you might like. I find ground cumin works really well but idk how much I put in. Also salt (optional). Mix together and then mix in some water, 1 cup I think, and let the seeds absorb it for a minute or two.

Now spread the mix out onto a baking tray (I use parchment paper) and smooth it out with the back of a spoon to less than 1/2 cm thick. You could score it at this point if you like. This quantity basically covers a whole baking tray.

It tastes really nice whichever way. How long and how hot to cook for - depends where you're aiming on the cracker->bread continuum. Hotter/longer gives you crackers, less heat/less time gives you something akin to bread (but not close kin, mind). I've done less than an hour at 150° and 3+ hours at 100° - both came out well.

Oh yes, btw I think the golden flax seeds are nicer than the brown ones.

WartOrNot · 06/02/2025 23:27

I've been eating it for years. Does nothing for my hair or menopause symptoms, but does wonders for my bowels.

I like the Linwoods one with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, goji berries, and something else. I don't know whether the other ingredients do anything special, but it's tasty. Plain flaxseed is a bit meh. I like to enjoy my food.

You can find it in health food shops, supermarkets, Costco. I keep it in the fridge, with a clip to keep out air, and put some in my yogurt every morning. Sometimes I stir some up in a glass of water or almond 'milk' and leave it to form a sort of jelly, which I might add to food or just eat as is.

Yes, this. Omega 3 deteriorates quickly with grinding, and heat basically destroys it, so please do buy the flax seed whole and grind when you are about to use it. I understand that the milled flax seed won't work as well for this reason... It's much cheaper bought whole too :) Good luck!

EarlierDistraction · 06/02/2025 23:33

I have it as part of my overnight oats, started about 6 months ago, I also have a scoop of mixed seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, chia etc). My cholesterol lipid ratio has significantly improved.

StartleBright · 12/02/2025 10:56

I have them whole in my porridge for breakfast, most mornings. I mix oats (various sizes and kinds as find the Quaker Oats too mushy) with chia seeds and flaxseeds in a large Tupperware and take out a portion at a time. Easy way to improve fibre and a teensy bit more protein.
If I use the oats for cooking - cookies, flapjacks etc then I also get the bonus of the flax and chia.
It has helped my digestion. But couldn't say about anything else.

Thanks to everyone else for sharing their ideas too!

JinglingSpringbells · 12/02/2025 16:40

@Jellycat70 Flaxseed and linseed are the same.

There are mixed seed packets for sale in supermarkets. Usually a mix of Sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and linseed (and I add my own chia seeds.)
There's no need to store them anywhere special- just a container.

I use them on Greek yoghurt and porridge.

Linseed/flaxseed absorb a lot of water when you digest them and they are good for the bowels.

Ilovelowry · 13/02/2025 15:53

I love it. It's like crumbled digestive biscuit. I never kept mine in the fridge, I don't notice the gone off smell though I am aware that this happens (fish smell).

I make little cheesecake breakfast bowls.

Glass bowl, stewed blueberries on the bottom, handful of oats and handful of flax, then mixed kefir and yoghurt with loads of grated lemon rind mixed through. I leave it to set overnight. It's so delicious.

I eat it daily mainly because I have prolapse and so everything I can to keep my poo soft and regular. I didn't know about the hair benefits.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 13/02/2025 16:22

I have it on my porridge in the mornings with blueberries, almonds and walnuts.

I'm not sure it does much, but it makes for a substantial breakfast.

I didn't know that it went off though, I keep mine in a sealed container, must check now if it starts to smell weird.
