Coil coming out - what now?’

Finding50s · 04/02/2025 14:34

6 years ago I had a Mirena coil inserted after years of painful periods, PCOS, infertility and perimenopause from hell.

Within days I was a new woman. A year ago (5 years of coil, age 54) I asked if they wanted to remove it, and they said leave it another year. I’ve just asked again (now 6 years with coil, age 55) and they’ve made an appointment to remove it.

I’m now freaking out because the past 6 years have been bliss. I’m not even sure I’ve had many meno symptoms because compared to the previous cycle shit show, it’s been fine.

I’m 55, got no spotting, I’m happiest I’ve been in a long time and I don’t want to go back to my old depressed moody hormonal self.

When it comes out, what can I expect? I’m thinking of delaying it as I’ve entered a half marathon and I can’t afford to miss any training.

You can have another coil. My antiHRT doctor told me I couldn't, but a gynae specialist advanced nurse practitioner put a new one in for me. My mental health took a massive dive when I was without it.

excan, can I ask where about you are on the menopause journey? What age did you take it out? I’m worried they won’t give me another one at 55.

They can be used as the progesterone part of HRT, I hope that when mine needs coming out next year I will replace it with another.

My doctor told me if a coil goes in after the age of 45 then it can just stay there. Why have it removed if it's not causing you a problem?

stclair · 04/02/2025 18:46

You can’t get a mirena coil inserted for hrt purposes on the nhs unfortunately (in my part of the uk anyway). Can do for bleeding issues etc though

How odd when the NHS website mentions it as an option https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt/types-of-hormone-replacement-therapy-hrt/

Hi OP, I have a coil for HRT, I can't see any reason why I won't keep replacing it after each 5yr period. I assume I won't need a hysterectomy, so will need some form of progesterone for my HRT.

Why won't you have another one put in?

@stclair the mirena coil is a well known and well used HRT progesterone source. My GP suggested it for HRT.

Willow12345 · 04/02/2025 18:58

@stclair my mirena coil is part of my HRT (nhs). I'm in my 50s and I was told after five years they would replace it with another.

SongSungBlues · 04/02/2025 19:08

Same, late 50s here, and I have a Mirena for the projesterone part of my HRT. I will definitely want to get another one when this one runs out!

yikesanotherbooboo · 04/02/2025 19:11

It can stay in for up to 8 years if it is not being used for HRT( only 5 in that case).
I really depends on whether you are menopausal. As far as contraception is concerned after 55 this is not needed. Most women's periods have stopped by 55 so you could have it removed and if your periods return ask for it to be reinserted of that is a possibility ( it can be more. Difficult post menopause).
You could ask for a blood test to see if you appear to be menopausal but it isn't completely reliable. Why not have a telephone appointment to talk through your concerns?

I'm 61, they last for 5 years as part of HRT as some pp have said

Finding50s · 05/02/2025 19:11

Ok, thanks to your cool heads I’ve rearranged my appointment to be a phone consultation rather than going in to take it out.

If I can leave it in longer I will. I feel amazing, as in no periods, no flooding, no PMS off the scale, all as a result of having no cycle.

I’m not on HRT. I was on oestrogel and progesterone tablets but they made me feel terrible, and depressed. I swapped out the progesterone for the Mirena and I was a new woman. Honestly, I was the devil around my periods and perimeno. Days later I felt so great. I was very lax on the oestrogel so I stopped it, and felt much better. I used to get some spotting every month but nothing for at least 18 months now.

I’ve always had low progesterone. I had fertility treatment for luteal phase defect (caused by low progesterone) and had to have injections to get me to week 12 to keep my pregnancies as my prog was so low. It’s been hell!

So, if it isn’t broke, I don’t want to fix it.

I’ll speak to the nurse practitioner who put in the Mirena 6 years ago, gave me great advice, and saved my marriage. I can’t go back to progesterone hell. I want to keep it in, or get another one.

My DH just said “oh no, please God, don’t go there again” 😝

thanks everyone

I've been offered my 3rd mirena coil at 58.
Been on oestrogel and utrogestan for 5 yrs and was feeling depressed.
Stopped it and mood lifted then the dizzy spells started and anxiety.
I feel that I need to back on the oestrogen and hope to get coil fitted in the coming weeks.

Finding50s · 05/02/2025 19:47

Hopefully you’ll feel better soon Whatisfor

The Utrogeston was awful. It made me feel so depressed every time I took it. It’s nasty.
