Early Menstruation = Early Menopause?

Hi all
Im 36 now and started my period at 10 and 3/4. My DD also started hers at this age. My mother said mine came early as she didn't get her period until 14. My sister also had her period at 14. I read this can happen and daughters don't always follow their mother's dateline.

When I looked up when I might start peri it mentioned that it's similar age to your mum. My mum had me at 39 and brother at 41. I think she had her tubes ties after this but I'm unsure.
She has passed away a while ago and I don't know anything about her menopause.

When might peri and menopause happen for me? Some websites said I could be peri now. My period is still regular and i'm not on contraceptives (Not trying to conceive just sexless).

Thanks!

Early first period is often linked to body weight. Girls over 7.5 stone are likely to start their periods soon, whatever their age.
For the record I was 10 and stopped abruptly at 50. No peri. On the mini pill for 6 years pre children. Had them at 30 and 38.

There’s no need to even think about it at 36!

PearlClutzsche · 26/01/2025 09:36

I was 12, and still having periods when I started HRT at 53, so no idea when official menopause was, but at least 54. Peri symptoms were heavy bleeding from about 47 and rubbish sleep.

I don’t think you have much to worry about just yet, OP

I started at 11 and was done by 45. All the women in my family went through menopause early, ranging from 36 to 45. I haven't ever heard of it being linked to starting age, only to your mother's age of menopause which I appreciate you don't know. Did she have any sisters?

That's interesting, my mother was very slim as a child while I was more than 7.5st at 10. My daughter was smaller than 7st at 10 and her father hit puberty at 15 or 16.

Females are born with the total number of eggs that they'll ever have. So logic follows that if you start releasing eggs earlier, you'll finish releasing them earlier too. It's not quite that straight forward tho.

I started my periods aged 11, both my daughters were aged 10. I'm 48 now and have had only 1 period a year for the last 3 years. I'd imagine I'm about done now. Not had any menopause symptoms aside from no periods.

Yes but they were older than her and have passed away. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I started at 12 and went into menopause at 37. Also told that this would follow my mum but she never told me about it before she died so was a big shock. Luckily I finished having my children at 34.

My mum and gran started their period at 11 and both went through menopause mid-late 40s.
I also started at 11 and am 43 now and I think definitely starting with perimenopause.
My DD started at 11 too, I think we all do in my family!

devildeepbluesea · 26/01/2025 10:56

I started at 10. No sign of them stopping, I’m 51 now. DD is extremely tall (and heavy - a tad too heavy) and is nearly 12. Hasn’t started yet.

No, it's a bit of a myth that early starts = early menopause @Fruitylooop

The average age of menopause in the UK is 51. You can have subtle signs of things winding down for some years but it varies a lot. I had hardly any signs of peri until about 48/49 then a few irregular cycles. Post meno by 53.

Try not to worry - you're very young. A lot of women now are having their first baby at 35/36! With more after that.

JinglingSpringbells · 26/01/2025 11:01

Not necessarily as not all women have the same number of eggs,

mitogoshigg · 26/01/2025 11:05

I started at 11 and still going strong at 51 so I don't think there is a strong link

LittleHangleton · 26/01/2025 11:06

That's why I said it's not that straightforward.

It is true that girls are born with all the eggs they'll ever have though. It's a fact I like - your children were present in their maternal grandmother's uterus. When your mother was pregnant with you, the eggs that would become your children were inside you, inside her uterus. Likewise, your daughters children were in your own uterus, when you were pregnant with your daughter.

Seeline · 26/01/2025 11:11

I started at 12 and hit official Meno at 56.
My mum was all finished at 50 so there can be a lot of variation.

Jasmin71 · 26/01/2025 11:19

Actually the opposite. This is the way I understand it.

You have a finite amount of eggs. Not everyone has the same amount.

If you have relatively more you will menstruate over a longer period of time.

Start early/ finish late
Start late/ finish early.

Other factors such as cycle length etc.. determine your fertile period.

PLHJ84 · 26/01/2025 11:42

I started at same age. 40 now & definitely in peri!

pizzaHeart · 26/01/2025 11:55

Im quite sceptical about the weight theory my mum was very slim and petite, and according to this theory she should have started her periods at 20 but it happened much early. She got married at 20 and had her first child. The same with me and DD, I started at 13 and DD at 12 , however if we go by the weight theory I should have started at 9 (I was quite a chubby child) and DD should have started somewhere after 18.

Movinghouseatlast · 26/01/2025 12:03

I started at 10, finished at 52.

All the women in my maternal family side have had horrendous symtoms. It wasn't anything I ever thought about though so I was very unprepared, as was my sister who was sectioned at one point. I think the more information that is out there the better, it shouldn't be something to be ashamed of.
