Is feeling feverish a perimenopause symptom?

Not actually a fever, but feeling like one - but hot and cold, tired, aching bones and legs etc

I'm not talking about hot flushing, just that feeling like you're about to come down with flu.

I've had it a few times over the last few months and then not actually got ill. At first I thought it was just exhaustion but now I'm starting to wonder if it's related to my cycle (which I can't track as I'm in Mirena so don't have clear period start and end dates, I just spot at the moment) because it's happened so many times.

I'm going to start charting it and maybe see the doctor but I'm interested in any experiences - has anyone else had this?
Noted it today because yesterday I had cramping.

For reference I'm 42 (43 in few months)

Yes, I think me.

With hindsight, I was around that age and kept feeling as if I was coming down with "a cold or something" then nothing coming of it. I also had random aches that were here today, gone tomorrow. I put that down to being overweight but, again, with hindsight, maybe not.

Periods were still normal, or nothing that made me jump to any conclusions.

Good idea to track the symptoms. It is a slow process though. For me, it was about 10 years from those early signs to full menopause, with the 2 years before my last period being the strangest and what made me realise I was That Age 😀

Yes me. I described the feeling the doctor as exactly that ‘I feel like I’m coming down with something’.
‘And do you?’
’No’
’Well that’s alright then’
Ermm…well no because I permanently feel like I’m coming down with something!!
but then my docs were entirely useless around the peri menopause.

I regularly feel like this around ovulation. Not sure if it's perimenopause as I'm 32, but it's been like this for maybe a year, since my periods came back after DD2

Collette78 · 24/01/2025 19:09

Yes it is … I usually get it for a couple of days every 3-4 weeks. Super achey, feverish and lethargic.

I've started taking Ashwagandha the last few weeks and haven’t had it since then … not sure if that’s why though.

LostittoBostik · 24/01/2025 19:39

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful.

I've just taken my temp and actually it is a bit raised. So maybe this time I have actually caught something from my DD.

However other months I haven't so this is really useful to know. I will start plotting these symptoms. I'm also going to start taking a menopause supplement to see if that helps me find my energy and strength again!

Ugh ten years. I'm already so exhausted.

I get this at ovulation. It's a 'thing' apparently. I'm 46 and definitely peri. Also have mirena and still bleed intermittently.

Haha. It's not exactly plain sailing after your periods stop either 😂I'm still waiting for this 'second spring' people keep talking about.

I think it was my mid 40s when I decided I was fat and unfit and had a bit of a diet and lifestyle overhaul. I guess I'll never know if it made a difference but it certainly didn't do me any harm and hopefully stood me in good stead for delaying things like arthritis, heart disease, etc.

LostittoBostik · 25/01/2025 07:41

How old are you now @DatingDinosaur ? Did you try HRT or just push through the thing?

At 42 my youngest is only 4 and I work 4 days and have a DH is a shift worker so am totally overwhelmed with just life stuff so it's really hard to work out what's hormonal change and what's just not having enough rest or time just for me to relax/exercise.

I'm a healthy BMI but it has crept up in the last 18 months and I'm very aware of that so I'm also trying to have a bit of a focus on diet and fitting in exercise this year. (I'm also having trouble with my Achilles heels which doesn't help with that)

It's not a recognised sign of peri, @LostittoBostik .

Sounds more like you're a bit under the weather and fighting off a virus a lot of the time.

I agree with PP who say maybe it's time to work on your overall healthy lifestyle.

Your GP would probably want some evidence of peri like missing periods or irregular cycles, hot flushes, insomnia etc.

You're quite young for peri because although some women are post meno by 45, that's now considered early- average age is 51.

DatingDinosaur · 25/01/2025 08:40

Mid 50s now @LostittoBostik . Didn't think to try HRT as I just assumed it was the stress of life and being overweight and unfit. And I still believe that was the case and it was just spotlighted by fluctuating hormones at that age.

I don't think HRT would have been much use for me in the early days as hormone levels weren't dropping enough to affect my periods. I took stock of my life and changed the things I could.

I do have to point out though that I've never taken hormonal contraceptives and prefer not to 'meddle with nature'. Obviously if I turn in to a murderous psycho-bitch then I'll reconsider but I think aches and pains and general malaise are par for the course through life and will happen regardless of hormone activity. But this is just my opinion.
