Experiences of mirena coil as HRT

I’m 44, never really got on with hormonal contraception when I was younger and so after my last child was born opted for a copper coil which has been fab for the past 10 years. It needs removing/changing in the next couple of months and I’m wondering as I’m now experiencing perimenopausal symptoms, whether I should opt for a mirena coil instead as it would also double up as some HRT? Has anyone else done this and how do you find it?

if I don’t I’m going to need to start some form of HRT soon as I’m getting a lot of symptoms but wondered if mirena is effective for this or something g that just get foisted on middle aged women as a solution for some of the perimenopausal symptoms

I had 3 mirena coils over about 15 years. First about 40 years old.
It was fitted due to long, heavy periods. The mirena stopped all my periods and I literally sailed through the menopause.
I can’t say it was definitely the mirena but I think it was.

It's amazing.

I tried the mirena twice in my 30s and found it uncomfortable once in. But I gave it a proper go this time.

I have mirena, oestrogen and testosterone and the mirena hasn't caused me any emotional issues like the pill did and also utrogestan when I first started HRT.

I only use it for HRT as we use condoms for sex so can't comment on whether it has an impact on that.

Like you I didn't get on with hormonal contraception and opted for a copper coil. I was happy with this with the exception of heavy periods. These became unbearable in my mid-40s and I moved to Mirena. It took a good 6-8 months to get used to it and I considered taking it out several times (constant spotting, headaches, weight gain) but gradually the symptoms started to settle and I now have no symptoms and no bleeding and love it. I've since started HRT and love the fact that the Mirena takes care of the progesterone part. I will continue using the Mirena coil for us long as I'm on HRT unless advised otherwise.

This is all really helpful everyone and reassuring how this has helped as part of HRT. I’ll definitely be suggesting this to the GP then
