Bedding to balance hot+cold cycles throughout the night

I'm postmenopausal and no longer have sweats or hot flushes. If anything, I'm quite cold this winter. Thyroid levels checked and ok.

I've tried layering light duvet with thick heavy blanket, I've tried synthetic duvets at all togs (either too cold or too warm) and I've even tried and currently using a silk duvet. It feels luxurious and cosy but I'm waking every twenty minutes it seems, either cold (then grab my hot water bottle and pull heavy blanket over top of duvet )or too warm when I kick the it all off.

Currently wearing a long thin cotton nightie as legs feel cold but too warm in PJ's.

Argh. Any suggestions? Should I invest in wool ? I'm so fed up of spending a fortune.
Thank you

I have a thin duvet and a thicker blanket on top. Do a fair bit of throwing it off then pulling it back on, every night!
Also wear fluffy socks that usually end up on the floor in the morning.
I don't think there is one perfect solution to this issue, so give myself options. Same with pillows. Firm, softer, my preference seems to change weekly.
Sorry, can't be more help.

Not sure if you sleep alone, that sounds quite disruptive for you. We found a solution in a super king bed where we can barely find each other. It has a winter and summer side of the mattress. We just turned it last weekend to Winter. Then we have a waterproof mattress topper, an expensive silent one in bamboo that is cool. Then a high thread count cotton sheet. Then we each have a super cheap from Amazon pair of double duvets, the ones you don't put a cover on. That's enough for my OH. But I'm like you and vary in temperature. So on top we have a massive super king tartan duvet cover and inside it a comforter (bed spread to oldies like me) and the 1.5 tog summer duvet we had on our old bed. I wear PJ's with tights ankles to stop them riding up.

I have a cool sheet from m and s, a 10 tog duvet and a fleece over blanket, i sleep with the window open regardless of the temperature and use a combination of all 3 covers throughout the night, mind you I'm not sleeping anyway as I've broken my elbow so it's academic for the next month or so till the pain settles,

I found a wool duvet sorted that.

I’ve got a wool duvet/ cotton bedding and still find myself too hot. Wool duvets are extremely heavy too.

Thank you everyone. I wondered about wool. Would be curious to see if anyone else has found it helps

I was hopeful for wool - got a Baavet one. It is lovely, but I still spend half the night throwing it off and the other pulling it up. I find thin socks help with regulating the cold periods, which tend to be the earlier cycles - they never make it through the night though. I've tried wearing PJs too, but hate having them floating around my legs, so just wear a t-shirt.

I’ve got a Fogarty wool that I’ve had for 5 years. It’s not very thick and only medium weight but I’ve never woken up too cold and only occasionally swap it out for a top sheet on a very hot summer night.

On very cold nights (and I have a cold old house of solid brick) I take a hot water bottle to bed just to take the chill off.

I don’t run particularly cold but I do sleep alone in a king sized bed after splitting up with my other half in the summer. And I sleep in the nip 😀I’m allergic to down and don’t like synthetic duvets so this is perfect for me. I don’t think I’ll ever change back.

Saisong that'll be me.
Good to hear your experience everyone

What temperature is your bedroom? I find I sleep best in a very cold room as long as I'm covered.

Princessfluffy · 27/01/2025 09:24

Wool duvets are great for being comfortable in a wide range of temperatures.
