I'm mortified!
I'm 48 and menopausal (gp confirmed with blood tests a while ago)
Never in my life have I wet the bed but last night I woke up and I had, I'm mortified.

Is this normal? I'm so worried. I've noticed recently I'm struggling to hold it in when I need to pee but never thought I'd pee in the night 😢

I'm on anti depressants for irritability due to menopause but can't go on HRT because blood clotting history.

Are you doing pelvic floor exercises? You can ask for a referral to a women’s physio.
With your history can you have vaginal oestrogen?

blowuptiger · 21/01/2025 07:03

No I haven't done any exercises. I've never had a problem like that before, I am leaking during the day if I can't get to a toilet in time. I'm so upset by it.

I don't know if I can have that, I'll have to check with my gp

Huge sympathy, OP. What a horrible experience for you (and definitely one of my nightmares).

I thought it was generally accepted that transdermal oestrogen did not increase clot risk? So patches/gels/sprays are all fine to use.

Vaginal oestrogen would also be fine and will help the tissues to avoid further atrophy.

blowuptiger · 21/01/2025 07:10

Can I get those over the counter?

I also recommend taking vitamin D supplements - they helped my bladder

Oh you poor thing xx vaginal oestrogen should really help

you can - you can get Gina less Aries and ovesse cream

do talk to your GP or maybe practice nurse and see if you can get them on prescription purely because it’s so much cheaper

Try not to panic. This could be a totally random one off and nothing to do with anything other than a weird dream and a very deep sleep. You only need to seek help if it happens again.

blowuptiger · 21/01/2025 07:39

@ChocolateMagnum That's what my DH said but I can't help but panic as it's such a shock.
To be fair I have been exhausted recently and not sleeping well at all. Trouble is I constantly feel like I need to pee even now

Uti?

Sounds like a UTI then

blowuptiger · 21/01/2025 07:43

@Magamaga That's what I'm thinking but when I've had them in the past I've never wet the bed 😢😭

UTI are a common side effect of vaginal atrophy along with needing to go to the loo a lot, thinning vulval & vaginal skin and itchiness

as you are menopausal @blowuptiger trying vaginal oestrogen couldn’t hurt

Sounds like you have a UTI brewing.

NHS guidelines say that I can't have vaginal oestrogen because of history of blood clots 😩

EBearhug · 21/01/2025 08:23

My main symptom of a UTI was urge incontinence.

Difficultwill · 21/01/2025 08:28

Dear Blowuptiger. Don’t panic
Make an appointment to see gp or at least speak to them today re ?UTI make sure they send a specimen of urine to the lab.
Talk to gp about vagina gels. Try and get a referral to the menopause clinic to discuss options re drugs and pelvic floor physio.
Dry out the bed. Hairdryer may help but the mattress may need replacing depending on type.
Get some Tena pants. You can get these from the supermarket. If you don’t wear them tonight you will not sleep due to fear of it happening again.
Gets some Tena pads to wear during the dry for little leaks
Drink less in the evening
This is probably a one off and is so much more common than you think!
please don’t feel embarrassed
Good luck

BlondeMamaToBe · 21/01/2025 08:29

I would check for UTI. You can get treatment via the pharmacy.

Calmhappyandhealthy · 21/01/2025 08:35

See GP re vaginal oestrogen or something similar

See physio re pelvic floor (specialist physio)

Start kegels now, today. Download kegel app

I'm guessing the above will help you within 2 weeks

NHS guidelines say that I can't have vaginal oestrogen because of history of blood clots 😩

I'm pretty sure the guidance does not say that. Can you post the actual wording you've found?

Vaginal estrogen is not absorbed into the body.
And the type that's in vaginal creams doesn't cause blood clots anyway.

The type of estrogen that can cause blood clots is tablet form taken orally.

You don't say what your history of blood clots is, but unless it was severe and very recent, the chances are you can use full HRT.

You need to speak to a specialist about your clotting and see what they say.

Meanwhile, ask your GP to refer you to a women's physio but the wait may be ages so you can refer yourself to a private one- look online for ones in your area.

You can start and do pelvic floor exercises now- lots of videos etc online about how to do them properly.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 21/01/2025 08:40

Get checked for a UTI, and see if you can get vaginal oestrogen. Be prepared to seek help from a private menopause specialist if your GP isn't being helpful.
