Has anyone had any experience with St John’s Wort or any other natural supplements for menopause symptoms? I have anxiety which really takes my energy. Thank you so much for any replies!

I am on HRT which might not be for you, but I've had a lot of success with yoga and meditation. I have an 'insight timer' subscription and do 5 and 10 min meditations.

I was VERY anxious last year and I'm a much better place now.

I also maintained a lot of walking and exercise.

The only thing that dealt with anxiety and panic was HRT, is that an option for you? I also take l thianine from Willpowders, magnesium glycinate at bedtime and use cbd.

Can't help on the supplements though sorry!

I take an inordinate amount of vitamins though.

Morning - lions mane, magnesium malate, vitamin D plus K2, zinc and folate.

Evening - antihistamine, magnesium glycinate (450mg elemental) which helps sleep.

Thanks Jemimapuddleduk. Just to explain in a bit more detail, I have been on HRT for 4 months and it definitely did relieve some of the symptoms. However, I have a fibroid and because I started bleeding a couple of weeks ago, I panicked because I thought that the fibroid had grown and was causing the bleeding. I don’t know if that was the cause, but I stopped HRT just in case. Then I had a heavy HRT withdrawal bleed anyway! It’s stopped now, but I haven’t restarted HRT because I’m worried it will start the bleeding again - of course, I don’t know if the fibroid was the cause but I’m confused as to what to do next. Meanwhile, the anxiety etc has started again, that why I was asking about alternatives to HRT. Thanks so much for replying.

Ashwagandha is good for anxiety. I also like holy basil. I use L Theanine and magnesium glycinate at night.

Though HRT was the biggest help for my night time anxiety! Understand you want to avoid though.

My mum took St John's Wort when she was going through the menopause and said it really helped her. I'm planning on trying it when I go through through it 🤞🏼

Thisagain4 · 19/01/2025 20:02

I was experiencing the same and only had one cup of tea per day. When I cut out all caffeine (unintentionally), the anxiety completely disappeared!

Have heard good things about St John's Wort but never tried it myself as it's not recommended for those of us who have an underactive thyroid.

Although HRT is what works best in my opinion, there are other things which I have found which help. Headspace meditation (or alternatives like Calm) train you to switch off the "noise" in your head and just be in the present. I have the app on my phone and try to do it every day, there was also a "rescue" quick meditation to calm you when you think you're spiralling.

Stay off the internet. It depends what your anxiety hooks into. I had my worst ever phase of anxiety in Feb/March 2020 just as Covid was kicking off and I spent hours online looking up information to try to reassure myself which really doesn't work as you just find another aspect to hook into. Watch some trashy TV which requires no thought instead - something like bakeoff, or a silly comedy.

I also used a Paul McKenna hypnotism thing which seemed to help a bit but it's not for everyone. And don't let any GP fob you off with anti depressants when your problem is hormonal.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 20/01/2025 08:37

Magnesium glycinate helped mine.

JinglingSpringbells · 20/01/2025 08:43

From what you have posted @Peacefully123 there doesn't seem to be any reason to stop your hrt.

Can you say what you were using?

You've not said what sort you're on but if you've been put onto combined continuous (estrogen +progesterone every day) , bleeding is normal in the first 6 months while your womb lining thins enough (so it won't usually bleed beyond 6 months.)

If you're on combined continuous, the fibroid isn't really relevant because after 6 months you shouldn't have any bleeding at all.

If you're not on continuous and on a cycle, you would normally bleed every month.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water just because of one blip, if HRT was helping.

Haven't tried St. John's Wort but red ginseng and moringa work on me, particularly my blood levels. For anxiety, I do meditation and acupuncture and it lessens palpitation.

Nocluewhattodo22 · 22/03/2025 15:12

Which brand of L theanine do you use? I was surprised that Holland & Barrett don’t srll
it in the uk.

Claire903 · 22/03/2025 16:57

CBD

Peacefully123 · 22/03/2025 18:56

I use Lamberts 200mg. It’s works for me and it doesn’t cost too much!
