HRT after ovary removal

Hi, I’m due to have surgery next week to remove large dermoid cysts and it’s likely I will have both ovaries removed due to damage and twisting caused by the cysts.
surgeon said I will go into surgical menopause and will need HRT until my early 50’s due to risks from early menopause, just turned 47.
i have little knowledge of HRT and have said I will have patches but I’m driving myself crazy looking at all the options. I’ve been on pop desogestral for years so can I carry on with that for the progesterone part then patches for estrogen? I have been told I’ll need both hormones. I don’t want to have mirena as I know to many horror stories about it.
The consultant was quite rushed and didn’t seem to want to talk about HRT so I’ve been trying to do some research myself.
Any advise appreciated.

You can use estrogen (patch or gel) and the mini pill but my understanding is you use 3 mini pills a day not one. You'd need a dr to confirm this.

You need to think about whether you fancy a patch stuck on your bum, first of all. Not everyone does!

They are convenient if you don't mind anyone else seeing it as you just change them 2 x a week. They come in different sizes but also different strengths.

You can get an estrogen only patch and then you need a tablet- Utrogestan- alongside it.

If you don't want a patch, you can choose from tablets or gel/spray (for the estrogen) . If you use gel or spray most women now use Utrogestan as the progesterone.

If you find the idea of tablets easier, Femoston is the closest to body-identical (like estrogen gel or spray and Utrogestan.)

Spray or gel is easier to adjust yourself without getting a new prescription for a higher dose of patch.

At 47 you may need a lot more estrogen than older women not having surgical menopause, so gel may suit you better so you can increase it.

Be prepared to try one type of 3 months and see how you feel.

Hope your op goes well.

I hope this hasn't confused you even more!
