Natural remedies for night sweats?

Does anyone have any tried and tested natural remedies for night sweats please? All windows are open, fan on, no clothes and not really helping. Spend the night boiling hot & freezing cold.

Assuming there is a medical reason to avoid hrt because that's probably the best

Cut out all refined sugar and alcohol and have more green leafy veg - but I think that really only works for relatively mild issues

Night sweats and hot flushes are currently my only symptoms so didn’t want to rush down the HRT route.

Sage supplements were hugely helpful for me. Red Clover helped with the weird rage too.
Look at the Menopace range, Boots.

Do you know what’s in menopace that you and others find so helpful? I just wondered as red clover is flagged up as something to be wary of if you’ve had estrogen positive breast cancer but menopace appears to have loads of other vitamins I could find somewhere else if it’s them that helps…

If you've had BC any supplements need to be run by your specialist to make sure they're ok.

There is a medical guide on this from the British Menopause Society - it's on 'alternatives to HRT' and you can find it with a google!

This may sound random but have you tried sleeping under a sheet and layered blankets rather than a duvet? Game changing for me.

It's worth knowing that the BMS report on supplements says that up to 40% of 'improvement' on herbs etc is placebo. Their report looks at all herbs etc as well as alternatives like prescribed drugs for women unable to use hrt.

Nothing wrong with that [placebo] if it works but this is why asking for ideas isn't always going to help because everyone is different. Sadly, a lot of rogue products are on the market that have no science behind them at all, or dubious science.

Night sweats and hot flushes are pretty awful and are certainly a valid enough reason to try HRT. Not everyone has masses of symptoms but lack of sleep long term is a major cause of a lot of ill health.

seconding sage supplements, I used the ones from A Vogel and they were excellent.
i agree no need for HRT at this stage if you can find an alternative.

Can I just add that a lot of information is available on the website of the British Menopause Society.

They are often overlooked as a source of info, but almost everything you want to know is on their website. You might have to go through a few links on their site or go to Consensus Statements and 'Education' on the menu tab.

The website isn't great to navigate, but if you google your query and put British Menopause Society in as a search term, it throws up lots of reports by them.

There aren't any, at least not with evidence.

If you're scared of hrt a new non hormonal treatment for flushes called Veoza has been licensed, clonidine is also sometimes prescribed.

I found a wool duvet useful at night sometimes.

Weirdly, I have fond Omega 3 helpful - I buy the one with Omega 3, 6 and 9 so maybe it's one of the others. I originally bought them for something else at all, but have found the nightsweats as a usual side effect.

Hi OP,
I had sweats for a month after a missed period. I tried a fizzy drink magnesium supplement and didn't have sweats that night. Had another fizzy magnesium two days later and haven't had a night sweat since (one week later). I am in perimenopause and my hormones are swinging around so I can't say for sure that it was the magnesium or just another change in hormones. But if the sweats come back for me then I will definitely try the magnesium supplement again.

When I had night sweats I just slept under sheets , I would try one of those meno mats/ cool mats to sleep on if I ever got them again , they've got great reviews and I got the smaller size for my dog in Summertime it's fab, they are washable fabric but ice cold to touch and somehow stay cold for a very long time .

Stopping alcohol stopped my night sweats.
Remembef that HRT is for the protection of your heart and bones, not just for stopping symptoms.

  1. Use bedding that promotes cooling like breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
  2. If you're not into HRT, consider taking it with your doctor's guided medication.

HRT was the only thing that worked for me. I was waking up drenched in sweat multiple times a night so sleep was in short supply. Started HRT and they went within a week or so. And so many other benefits of HRT. If you are suffering night sweats then that does indicate a hormone deficiency so all you are doing is replacing that.

I think you can spend a fortune on supplements which don't have much evidence unfortunately, but it's rebalancing your hormones that will make the difference. Adding in some oestrogen (and progesterone to protect your womb) is no more unnatural than adding in a supplement of magnesium or whatever. I put off trying hormone therapy for ages but would try it much earlier if I had my time again! It's just topping up your oestrogen, which has a huge number of benefits all over the body.

There's a specific cbt programme that has been shown to reduce the impact of hot flushes and night sweats, you could try that. There's a self help book by Moira Hunter (I think)

I used menopace for a while which i did find helpful (though there may have been a placebo effect there too)
I went on HRT which has stopped the night sweats completely. And I know it’s effective because I messed up my doses over Xmas (just got a bit lazy with the timings) and lots of symptoms came back.

The single thing that helped me the most was drinking loads of water each day. The night sweats always got worse if I hadn’t drink 2-3 litres a day… (I couldn’t take hrt so can’t compare it to that though.)
