Hair loss, already on HRT

Every time I wash my hair now I get a good handful of hair in the plug. I’ve always had thin hair, but now I’m noticeably losing volume. What can I do?
Im on magnesium glycinate, omega 3, B complex, D3 with K2.

You could try using some shampoos that contain caffeine, like Plantur.
The other thing is to consider if you have enough protein in your diet- 1gm for each kilo of your body weight.
There is no evidence that biotin works (I read a lot on it when I was shedding hair) .
The supplements you're taking won't have any effect on hair.

Be careful with Omega 3 supplements. If they are fish oil there is some concern about the quality of oil and whether it's contaminated because of less than good fishing practices and exposure to pollutants. There's also an ongoing debate over whether it's good to take them anyway (but that's another thread!)

It would be a good idea to get iron level and thyroid checked. If those are OK you could try minoxidil. It has worked well for me alongside thyroid meds, iron tablets and a ton of supplements.

DustyLee123 · 10/12/2024 11:24

I’m already on thyroxine, and iron should be ok now that I’m not bleeding on the coil.
I tried the Plantur shampoo in the past but didn’t like the way it felt on my hair, it felt dry and like there was something left on my hair.
Im happy on omega 3 as it made a big difference to my joints, and I buy what I think is good quality.
I know I need to up my protein, so will push with that, but I do try. I’m not a fan of relying on protein powders, so maybe I should just eat a roast chicken every day!

I've started taking biotin - I think it's helping.

JinglingSpringbells · 10/12/2024 11:56

I found Plantur really helped but it took about 3 months to see the new hair growing. It did make my scalp a bit dry so I started alternating it with normal shampoo, but as a shampoo I liked it. They also do a tonic which you can apply to your scalp, (with or without using the shampoo.)

What HRT are you on? Some progesterones are more likely to cause hair shedding as the have an androgenic effect.
Some are better as they are more like the progesterone that your body naturally produces.

Have a listen to this BBC programme that was on last week:

There's also been another longer thread on here this week but can't find it to link to it

Sliced Bread - Hair Loss Products - BBC Sounds

Can wonder products halt hair loss and grow back luscious locks?

DustyLee123 · 12/12/2024 07:23

I’ve listened to the BBC pod cast. I’ve taken from it that increasing protein, trying Minoxidil for at least 12 months, and using a caffeine tincture could help.

Have you been super stressed or ill lately?

Both of those resulted in huge hair loss for me. (Divorce and a bad bout of food poisoning…)

DustyLee123 · 12/12/2024 08:29

Yes, constantly stressed over the state of my marriage! And add peri in, and it’s a whole amount of stress!

Just found this thread - I could have written the OP. I am happy with the HRT regime but my hair seems to be taking a real hit.

I am wondering about shampoo/conditioner rather than a supplement.

Have heard of the plantur shampoo. Might give that a try.

DustyLee123 · 26/12/2024 12:04

I’m going to try the Natur Vital shampoo and tonic after seeing a TikTok about it

Ongoing issue for me, I’m 46 I was on HRT (stoped because it wasn’t really improving anything)- don’t think it has affected the hair loss which has been going on for 2 and a half years. Ditto underactive thyroid which I’ve had (and have controlled) for years.
I don’t have bald spots (yet) but my hair is noticeably thinner. Although I shed a lot I do seem to get regrowth but it means my hair is all different lengths and looks pretty rubbish. Sadly i think hair toppers might be the next step.

I have tried almost everything except minodixl. Plantur 45 didn’t help but it is quite nice to use. I switched to waterman’s (read about it on here)- although I don’t think that helps either I like the smell and it seems to be better at creating the illusion of thickness IMO though it does nothing to stop the shedding. I’ve read plenty of stuff to suggest that shampoos alone can do nothing to actually stop shedding. They can make your hair feel better tho.

I have been taking extra vitamin d and I think that might have helped a bit. Worth reading up on it. Most of us are vit d deficient and there are plenty of good reasons to up your intake on that, not just hair related.

I was you last year. The doctor said all the lotions and potions are just snake oil and to ride it out. I chose to get a weave before I lost too much. There are also some lovely hair toppers too. When my hair needs changing I might go with a topper. It's growing back now but in a year it's only about 2inches

Offredismysister · 26/12/2024 15:23

I bit the bullet & started minoxidil foam in August after deliberating for a year. I paid privately & saw a dermatologist first, who diagnosed mild androgenetic alopecia. She said no supplements or shampoos would help & not to waste money. I have seen a good improvement with minoxidil & will continue.

LonelyFooleightyfour · 26/12/2024 17:37

Declining estrogen levels and stress can cause hair thinning and hair loss. Try using a shampoo that is 60 or 70 percent naturally made. Also, a cold-pressed castor oil is good for hair regrowth.

OldEarAche · 01/01/2025 10:55

I stopped HRT and my hair loss stopped. It definitely got worse while I was on HRT and better off it.

Havalona · 01/01/2025 11:05

Its no harm to get a full blood count blood test. If nothing else it will reassure you that your iron and ferritin levels are normal. My hair loss was down to low haemoglobin and of course until I found that out I tried every product on the market and nothing worked. Full head of hair back now and feel good too after iron supplementation as prescribed.
