Hi
so I started using the cream about three weeks ago as was having unbalanced ph and no sign of infection. I stopped using it after a week as it just felt even more uncomfortable. But I’ve been reading a lot and wonder if I should have carried on as apparently it can help the acidity improve and my ph is too high. So last night used it again and sure enough this morning it’s itchy, and more of a discharge feeling then normal - which is my main symptom of ph imbalance - it’s not horrific but is it meant to feel soothing and not irritating? Thanks in advance for any advice! Its so hard to get help in this area!

How did you know what your pH was?

The guidance on Ovestin is to use it daily for 14 days then at least 2 x a week after.

It's really common to get some irritation at first because the vaginal tissues are thin but after a while the cells change, become thicker and there is no irritation.
Discharge is totally normal - some of it is the cream itself which comes out, and the rest is a normal reaction to the estrogen.

If you find it doesn't help longer term your GP can offer options which are a lower dose to start with.

Thank you. So because I am having such discomfort there I bought some ph tests. I’m assuming they are accurate but maybe I’m naive in that. I’m taking probiotics, eating the yoghurt etc. I’ll keep going with it then as maybe it has to get worse before it gets better…thanks! I’m booked in for a coil in January and I don’t want to do that if things don’t feel right

Eating things isn't going to make any difference to your vagina- being blunt. The irritation is almost sure to be loss of estrogen. And is just needs putting back.

Did you get your Ovestin from a GP? If so, and you find it is simply too strong there are other types of vaginal estrogen - one is 10 times weaker (but you are supposed to use 10X as much!) or there is a gel called Blissel. There is another one but I've forgotten the name.

If you're finding every day too much, you can use it every other day or just use less in the applicator.

Ah ok - so the reasoning behind that is a microbiome test a month or so ago showed I was depleted of the “good” bacteria lactobacillus. I’ll carry on - yes it’s from a gp. It’s not unbearable just uncomfortable but maybe that shows it’s needed.

I can understand that. But I think that the reason the pH levels change is because of lack of estrogen which the cells need and your intestine/gut is not the same type of skin as your vagina- to be blunt.

High pH in the vagina can lead to thrush and the bacteria that keep it healthy are out of balance, which is why some women apply live yoghurt there. But vaginal atrophy isn't thrush.

Well I’m really hoping you are right and this will help me! Thanks for your advice
