Thinning hair, SO upsetting

Whereismyjoiedevivre · 03/12/2024 22:45

Despite taking HRT my hair is noticeably thinner than a few months ago and totally different in texture from a few years ago. I really notice it when I tie it back very loosely, there’s so much less in the ponytail 😭

Please can you wise women recommend a genuine product that stimulates new growth and stops the shedding? Should I go to the GP? I’m willing to spend some money on this but only if I can be confident that it’ll work.

Hopeful thanks.

Thanks @PunishmentRoundupWithJoon Any recommendations of brands or where to buy them?

@WearsBlackEatsChocolateAvoidsPeople do you find the toppers pull any hair out when you use them? I’ve only seen them with little clips or comb attachments. Plus how do they stay on if you’re really thin on top!

Has anyone on here tried hair fibers?

I use the pressure sensitive clips which are supplied on the toppers, I often re-position them so they don't clip onto my finest areas but in the 10 years that I have worn toppers I have never experienced traction alopecia. Toppers aren't useful for people with very large areas of very thinning hair, if I ever get to that stage I will transition over to wigs.

Thanks @WearsBlackEatsChocolateAvoidsPeople thats really helpful.

@ConstantlyFuriosa - I've used Toppik and Nanogen, pretty much the same. There may be cheaper alternatives on ebay - I recall there was quite a lot when I looked a couple of years ago. They do different shades, so you'll probably be able to find one to suit. With the darker colours, there's the issue of it getting on your hands if you scratch your head absent mindedly, so that's something to remember. Though it's not a big issue as it settles quite well - it doesn't fall off if you shake your head about! And applying it can be slightly messy till you get your technique down.

I also bought something some 'hair shadow' - looks like an eye shadow palette. This can be used to fill in the edges of your hair. It might be marketed as root concealer too.

@ConstantlyFuriosa - you can buy Nanogen fibres in Boots, possibly Superdrug. Definitely ebay and Amazon for the Toppik.

Thanks so much @PunishmentRoundupWithJoon I’m learning a lot from this thread.

Has anyone seen pictures of Geena Davis lately? I think she may be using some kind of shadow/dye around her hairline these days. I only noticed it when I watched the film Blink Twice. Years ago I wouldn’t have noticed but since losing my own hair I’m on the lookout for signs I’m not alone!

There's just been a good segment on hairloss treatments on R4 - I think the programme was called 'Sliced Bread' (it was on just before 1pm). A proper look at what treatments work with a hairloss research scientist about which have real evidence, and discussion of what works for both women and men. I'm sure it would be available on BBC sounds and I think would be well worth a listen.

That’s really helpful @Pekkala will listen this evening.

I stopped having foils and get Balyage 3 times a year instead, it's made a huge difference to hair loss and my hair has thickened up loads.
