Health has suddenly stopped prescribing testosterone

VeryVeryCross · 28/11/2024 18:04

My GP is no longer allowed to prescribe testosterone because of a local health board decision. I found this out when I asked for a prescription today. I'll now have to pay £££ for a private prescription.
I'll be contacting my MP.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

I’ve only had an issue with them being reluctant to give me a prescription for HRT. My private menopause specialist intervened because it annoyed her how badly they were treating me. I have testosterone prescription privately I use Androfem as I didn’t want to be messing around with those little sachets.

VeryVeryCross · 28/11/2024 20:59

I used to use Androfem too but it was very pricey.

I was on private prescription for all my HRT plus the consultation fees as GP was rubbish so I was paying for everything I needed which was extortionate. That’s why my specialist insisted on the GP prescription for everything apart from the testosterone part. It took a long time for the GP to actually prescribe it on the NHS without me having to fight for it.

I'm about to order mine for the next 6 months. I'll let you know if it's approved. Which trust are you with? I'm in kent

VeryVeryCross · 28/11/2024 21:40

That's how I started, Autumnlife, but my GP did take is all over eventually. It adds up to a lot of money. I'm so annoyed that it can be taken away at the drop of a hat. If I couldn't afford to pay privately, I'd be really stuck.

I'm with Cardiff and Vale. If I'd told my GP I was running low at my appointment last month it would have been fine to prescribe it but this month - no you can't have it.

It’s dreadful how the GP treat us isn’t it? One minute oh yes I’ll give it you then snatched away in a heartbeat with no explanation. The pre payment prescription certificate for HRT does exclude Testosterone but they can prescribe.

FuckThePoPo · 28/11/2024 21:57

i'm nervous now!

VeryVeryCross · 28/11/2024 22:04

I think it's a very localised thing. It seems to be up to each health board whether they fund it or not.

Mine was approved @VeryVeryCross so I'm ok for the next 6-7 months but what a stress wondering all the time about it

VeryVeryCross · 29/11/2024 23:36

That's great news Fuck
I'm crossing my fingers that I can get mine via Superdrug. £18 for 3 sachets 🙄

@FuckThePoPoCan I ask how you got the GP to agree? I’m in Kent also and on Testogel and the consultant says it’s for the GP to pick up next time but that they will contest it. The GP surgery have already sent an offhand text to say they won’t be, not even a letter or discussion. I will be challenging this. So I’m looking for ways that others have been successful… anything useful to share? Any phrases or arguments or links that would help?

thanks!

It’s so random. I’m in the East of England and my GP is happy to prescribe testosterone as part of my HRT although it’s the little tubes of gel that have a very strong scent. I’d rather use one designed for women but it’s expensive so willing to compromise and take what I’m offered.

beezlebubnicky · 17/06/2025 08:33

Have you asked why the health board made that decision?
