Did you lose hair?

I'm 47 and this year I've lost about 50% of my hair. I'm so upset and embarrassed of it. I don't know if it's hormonal or something else. Did you lose hair during the menopause and, if so, did anything help and did it thicken up again?

I'm 45, and although I haven't noticed it coming out, it's definitely a lot thinner.

Would you ladies mind saying which HRT you were on that either made it worse or improved it?

I've just started Femoston 1/10 as I read that the kind of progesterone in it is least derived from testosterone so less likely to affect hair.

I've read very conflicting websites, some say oestrogen is hair protective, others say it is not and can in fact CAUSE hair loss. Others say that its the progesterone component that causes the hair loss, other websites say HRT has no effect either way.

I have thin hair and suffered hair loss even in my younger years, particularly when stressed. You can try cold-pressed castor oil. It works well for me.

Mine comes out in handfuls every time i comb or wash it. It was very thick previously so I think I am getting away with it, just. I have lots of 'baby hair' (previously known as 'frizz'. The texture has completely changed. I am on evorel sequi 50. I take iron and also b complex and a separate biotin. Weirdly my hair is the glossiest it's ever been but I am now scared to style it as it falls out so I just loosely tie it up every day now.

Mine is Oestrgel and Utrogestan, which has helped improve my hair.

HotHorseRadish · 21/11/2024 05:10

I’m also on Oestrogel and Utrogestan. Recently my Utrogestan was doubled and I noticed increased hair loss. I’ve reduced back down and think it’s settled.

I use regaine mens version (5% minoxidil) foam applied once per day. I also got my ferritin iron levels checked as was 26, GP said fine but a dermatologist said needs to be atleast 70 for hair health. I take 210mg ferrous funerate iron x2 daily and my hair stopped shedding.

Soupwithstring · 21/11/2024 08:02

Mine was coming out in handfuls. Then had a blood test and ferritin was v low, had 'non iron deficiency anaemia' and after exactly two years this week, my iron has gone from 16 (scale of 13-292) to 118 (scale of 0-150).

In this time I had a coil fitted, used TXA, started HRT and took iron supplements with vitamin C.

My hair is now thick and healthy looking again.

Soupwithstring · 21/11/2024 08:04

I should say that I did the alternate day protocol for my iron.

Every second morning, at 5am which is when I get up, I had a ferrous sulphate tablet with a high strength vitamin C tablet on an empty stomach. Nothing further at all for two hours.

I'm proof that if you stick to it, it works!

Soupwithstring · 21/11/2024 08:05

Oh and the low ferritin was due to the bad menopausal periods where clots were pouring out of me.

Same for me but started it five years ago so hair basically has stayed the same, it’s still lush

betterangels · 21/11/2024 09:44

Half of it. It feels awful. I'm sorry. I have taken hair vitamins now for two months and it has stopped much of the breakage.

SharpLily · 21/11/2024 09:52

I've lost about 50% of my hair, same as you, OP. Fortunately I had a lot of it but am not impressed with how it's looking now. HRT has been brilliant for other menopause symptoms but hasn't helped my hair at all.

Dontcallmescarface · 21/11/2024 10:14

I'm late 50's and been post menopause for almost 10 years. My hair is still as thick and wild as it ever was.

DBD1975 · 18/11/2024 00:39

My hair has got a lot thinner and falls out all the time, it is very upsetting. Been through breast cancer so can't do HRT, seriously considering extensions not for length but for volume.

I've had breast ER+ breast cancer too, so no HRT for me.

BiliousOhGod · 18/11/2024 10:56

Yep, I shed loads. HRT has helped slow this down, but minoxidil is what has helped re-grow it. There are "women's" versions, but I just use the men's once a day.

Is this only on prescription?

BiliousOhGod · 24/11/2024 21:01

No - you can get it everywhere. I buy mine on subscription on Amazon for the discount. I buy the Son's brand as it's cheaper than Regaine.
