Thickening of the Uterus Lining

NixCarts · 25/10/2024 21:29

I'm 55 and on Mirena Coil and Sandrena gel. This week I've had spotting and seen by GP. Referral for ultrasound. Sonographer said ovaries look okay, have fibroid but mentioned nothing else. I knew she couldn't. Results back today saying referral to Gynae as have thickening of the uterus lining. When you look this up it refers to Uterine Cancer. Has anyone been through thickening of the lining in 50s and menopausal?

obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/uog.1704

In postmenopausal women with bleeding, a thickened endometrium is associated with a 7.3% risk of endometrial cancer. So 92.7% chance of not being cancer. Even if it is endometrial cancer, it is a form of cancer with a very good prognosis, with the majority of patients being cured.
Wishing you all the best and I hope you get reassuring news soon.

I had thickening of the lining of the uterus and massive fibroids which were all caused by side effects of taking Tamoxifen. Had numerous biopsies which came back normal. I also have many friends with thickening of the lining and none have been anything sinister. Wishing you all the best and that you get your results very soon

Hi, I also have thickening with mirena. Referred for hysterocopy on Thursday.
any news for you?
wishing you luck

I thought the Mirena helps with thinning of your uterus? My lining is 7mm which is abnormal. I do have a Fibroid and possibility of adenomyosis..both I think effect the lining of the womb. My anxiety through the roof! X

I’m sorry. It’s so stressful . When is your procedure? Hysteroscopy? Xxxy

nowtygaffer · 26/10/2024 19:55

I had this recently. Had a hysteroscopy...not v nice but bearable. Dr took biopsy which came back fine. I think GP will adjust hrt soon but not heard anything yet.

Emma54 · 26/10/2024 20:09

What was your situation? How thick and did you have mirena?
so glad you had a good result xx

@NixCarts My mum had this she's 56. Her lining was 9mm. She was referred to a gynaecologist but never went. 3 months later she had a scan which showed her uterus and ovaries have atrophied. Don't know if it makes sense. The gynaecologist said all good now.

HRT Patches and mirena coil. Experienced some bleeding. Referred by GP to have a scan. Thickening of lining discovered (5.5) so then referred for a hysteroscopy. Biopsy taken and all fine. It was stressful time- but it’s best to get investigated as you are doing. Had my HRT patches adjusted. No problems since.

Thanks for responses. Its good to get everyone else's experiences. In away helps my anxiety.

Totally ruined my holiday this summer fretting over this. I'm the world's bloody expert with my turns out non cancerous bulky uterus.
No one's writing it on the internet or apparently keeping tabs but the specialist said she's getting lots of HRT women through with thickened linings.
I've increased my progesterone but once I got the all clear that was it, not had anyone suggest what to do next.
Best wishes

nowtygaffer · 30/10/2024 08:23

I've been in the same boat. I haven't been back to GPs yet to change hrt. Presumably they will increase my progesterone?

Hi everyone, I've just seen reading the comments on Marina coil. I'm 72 now & every year since 2022 I've had to have day case GA for biopsies for thickening of womb. In September last year (2025) I bled again slightly so had biopsy thankfully just benign Polyps again. In January & March this year (2026) I bled again so on the 28th of April I'm back in Day Surgery again for another biopsy but this time the Consultant wants to fit Marina coil to help disperse thickening. Last year it was 11mm thick but after Mounjaro I lost 4 stone last year & now the thickening is 7mm. Still too thick though. I had a voil in my early 40s & bled for 6 weeks then passed out having it removed so I'm not keen on it at all. I've been told I can't have Hysteroscopy in out patients because my womb is shut tight so a GA is necessary each time. In 2024 the doctor in day surgery ruptured my cervix trying to get into my womb for the biopsy & I bled for nearly a month then had the same thing done in 2025 by the Consultant & he managed to get into womb but it was full of blood from the rupture so no biopsy was taken & now I'm having another GA this month & if I consent a marina coil. What if the coil doesn't agree with me again & I need for weeks again, they won't be able to remove it in out patient clinic as they can't get in my womb unless I'm under yet another GA. I never thought Id be needing a coil at aged 72. I've been told I could have the pill to get Progesterone into me & that's what the coil does but the pill or even regular pessaries are less effective than the coil. I'm sorry to have gone on so long but any advice would be gold to me right now ladies. Thank you. xxx
