Anyone else with horrible migraines?

I'm late 40s and started this fun perimenopausal journey. The worst are migraines, I never had any till about a year ago. I'm pretty sure they're cycle related as they usually happen twice a month mid cycle and near the start of my period. They're he'll. My whole head throbs the pain at the back of my head is horrible coming right down My neck. I often feel dizzy and nauseous too, lights and sounds make it worse. It's horrible, I feel like I'm losing 4 days a month to it unable to properly function.
I tried HRT but it made no difference. No medication I've tried so far has made even a bit of difference.
Is this normal, think even knowing it happens to others I'd feel less alone and frustrated right now. I'm going tog o back to he doctors again but it's all frustrating. Could I really have years of this now?
Anyone relate? Any tips or ideas?
Thanks c

Sorry, I can't help but I just wanted to say that I never get headaches and I've started having them since I was put on Estriol for vaginal dryness. I'm post menopausal now.

They aren't anywhere near as bad as yours, just a constant mild headache for the last 2 weeks since I've started the Estriol.

Estriol contains a very low dose of estrogen and from what I've read it's the estrogen that can cause headaches so I assume that for you that it is the fluctuation in estrogen during your perimenopause.

I had them from age 9, when my hormones kicked off. They took days from my month for 40 odd years.
Menopause was horrendous as the daily preventative stopped working.
I ended up being referred to a neurologist who prescribed another triptan. That did the trick.

Now, in my mid 50's, I am off all medication apart from one triptan on the odd occasion I have one.

So sorry to read this.
I had the opposite - had migraines all my life (since teenage years) but they stopped since I've been on HRT and am menopausal.
During my migraine years, sumatriptan helped the best.
Best of luck

I started getting migraines like this in my 40s but they went away when I went on HRT. Sorry to hear that’s not worked for you.

What does your GP say about it?

Suchabigsleepyhead · 09/10/2024 18:15

Thanks all for your messages, much appreciated.
The doctor is sending me for blood tests just to check hormone levels and see if there's anything else going on. They've also prescribed me some other migraine medication to take as soon as symptoms start to see if that helps too so fingers crossed.
Good to know there are things out there to try and hopefully work, am keeping positive...which is easier as the migraines is finally easing this time round!!

I've always had migraines (usually the light ones) but it got heavy twice a month (before and after my period) and I feel it gets worse as I age, particularly when I'm stressed. I treat it with chamomile tea, meditation, and cold baths, and it's a relief for me. I still have migraine but not as piercing as before.

helpforgcse · 09/10/2024 20:33

have you tried sumatriptan?

Suchabigsleepyhead · 16/10/2024 20:31

@helpforgcse that's what I've been prescribed now so fingers crossed.
