Hi all I have searched and searched and unable to find the answer I ‘m looking for . I take utrogestan on day 15 to days 26. My period is usually every 4 weeks . Last period came three weeks in whilst taking utrogestan. I continued to take my dose to day 26.
should I have counted my period from Day 1 again?
I ve also just realised if I did have to count from day 1 again to take my utrogestan I am now 7 days late to start .. what should I do now ? Any advice would be so much appreciated.. I ‘m 45 and been taking hrt since June 2024.

I take mine day 1 to 25 of 28 days, so whatever your actual period cycle is, base the Utrogestan on 28 days. I was told I would have a withdrawal bleed in the three days that I don't take it, but haven't had that this month or last. I just write down the dates on the packet so I don't lose count. I'm new to it too!

JinglingSpringbells · 08/10/2024 12:41

The easiest way is to take them on the same DATE each month.
So whatever date you started in Sept, start that day in October.

You can't follow your own periods as they will become more and more irregular.
The withdrawal bleed should come after the last tablet but sometimes in peri you will bleed earlier.

Ignore that and stick to a date (as advised by specialists.)

@TheWomanWithTheStick you're using it continuously. This is for women post menopause and the regimen has been changed (compared to the leaflet) to taking it every day. Unless your periods have stopped altogether or are very few and far between it's fine to do this but if not your dr would have suggested sequential.

@JinglingSpringbells I was told to take it day 1 to 25, but then when I gave it a google I noticed what you said, that this is the pattern for post-menopause. I rang the doctor to check, and she said definitely day 1 to 25. I wonder if I should check again, as I know most people take it two weeks on two weeks off or thereabouts.... I am definitely not post-menopause!

Resisterance · 08/10/2024 12:55

I just take it for two weeks every month and set a reminder in the calendar to take it two weeks after the last dose again. Whether i have my period or not.

KnittedCardi · 08/10/2024 12:56

Agree with @JinglingSpringbells. I started taking it on the same date every month regardless of period cycle. My periods are not regular 28 day cycles, never were, so I can have periods any time within the cycle, even on the HRT regime. I often get them just before starting the Utrogestan. Weird but true.

FusionChefGeoff · 08/10/2024 12:59

I do dates too rather than cycle - my GP advised taking it on 1st - 12th every month (I am peri not post) and I find that very easy to follow!!

Generally period starts just after I finish but it's getting a bit wonky! Regardless, I start next round on the 1st of the month.

RavenT · 08/10/2024 13:20

I take mine for 12 days every month, from day 15 to 26, like you OP. Usually I have a bleed within 4 or 5 days of coming off it - however this is now getting longer and it's at least a week until I bleed. Is this normal? (Sorry to derail thread OP, but I do find these threads really useful!)

TheWomanWithTheStick · 08/10/2024 13:53

I've just checked on my NHS app, and it definitely says take on day 1 - 25. Why am I different from everyone else??!

Your GP's confused.

Here is an explanation from a medical site.

https://www.balance-menopause.com/menopause-library/micronised-progesterone-or-utrogestan-factsheet/

How is Utrogestan taken?

Utrogestan is given as a 100mg capsule. There are two ways of taking Utrogestan.

– For women who have still had periods in the last 6-12 months, the usual recommended dose is two 100mg capsules, taken together each evening, for two out of four weeks, on a repeating basis.

– For women who have not had a period for over a year, the usual recommended dose is taking one 100mg capsule every evening, without a break.

Bear in mind that you don't have to do the 14 days on/ 14 off. There's no medical reason for this - it was only suggested to 'make it easier to remember.'

The other way is 12 days every months (reduces side effects if you have any.)

The NHS website says this:

  • You'll usually take Utrogestan on certain days each month: either 2 capsules every day on days 15 to 26, or 1 capsule every day on days 1 to 25 of your medicine's 28 day cycle. Sometimes you might be advised to take it every day without a break.

This is how severe my brain fog is! Just rang docs to get blood test results for my son, and it never crossed my mind to ask the doc to check about the Utro, despite having had this discussion, googling, and checking my NHS app 😫
Also, I forgot to bring my potato to work, so am looking at a very lonely tin of tuna......

The NHS website online has the info you need. My previous post was copied/pasted from the NHS website on Utrogestan (not the app.)
