Help… I have recently started taking Utrogestan100 on 1-25 days of my cycle. My question is when do I need to start taking it again? 5 days later? Or when I’ve had my period they are not like clockwork at the moment at I have had a bleed halfway through since taking the tablets which is now making my normal cycle late. I can’t seem a definite answer….
any advice would be much appreciated!

https://www.balance-menopause.com/menopause-library/micronised-progesterone-or-utrogestan-factsheet/

This explains it.

As you still have periods you shouldn't be using the continuous regimen which is for women post menopause. GP should have guided you .

The link above says 2 weeks on/ 2 weeks off.

Many specialists suggest 12 days x 200mgs (2 capsules) per calendar month. Starting on the same date each month. That's a 30day cycle, rather than 28 days.

The 14 days on/off is for simplicity but gives a bit more than many women need or can tolerate (if they have side effects.)

Micronised progesterone or Utrogestan® Factsheet - balance menopause

This factsheet gives information about the progesterone most often prescribed as part of a HRT routine - Utrogestan.

I was initially on 25 day utrogestan.
It’s 25/28 days, so you take three days off before starting again.
Day one is always the same day of the week, which for me was Saturday, and that Wednesday Thursday and Friday were always the three days where I had a break for days 26-26, starting again on the Saturday

Thank you for your message, I didn’t make it clear as to why I am taking HRT I have had issues with my hair whereby I have lost quite a bit due to it breaking off. My GP recommend that I take one pump of Oestrogel alongside one Ustrogan100 tablet to see if that helped with the regrowth of my hair. I’m not taking it for any menopause symptoms although hair thinning can be one I’m putting my down to a change in diet. I spoke to Pharmacist yesterday and she said to take it up to day 25 and then stop for 5 days which I have done but I’m 3 days in and no period so do I just start taking the tablets again which surly will
just throw my cycle out of sync?

Thank you for your reply and I have being do the same, 25 days on and 3 days off but as I am having periods they don’t always come once I’ve stopped taking the the tablet and therefore I’m getting bleeding when I shouldn’t be. I spoke to a Pharmacist yesterdays and she said to wait for 5 days, this is where the confusion comes from. Maybe I just need to back to my Dr.

How long have you been on this regime? It can take a good number of months before everything settles down. It may be that you’re still just getting used to it.

On a side note, since I started taking Vits B and D, iron and fish oil, my hair seems much thicker!

The 25 days has been changed in practice to every day.

The leaflet hasn't been changed but drs should be telling women that for post-meno use it's taken every day.

And the regimen you're using is for women without periods for 12 months or more.

Are you in the UK? It's just a bit surprising that a GP has prescribed HRT for hair loss when you have no other symptoms.

How old are you and what happened with your diet?

As a woman who is not post menopausal you shouldn't be on that dose.
The pharmacist isn't right either- it's either 12/14 days per month or every day.

Taking combined continuous HRT when you still have periods can do all sorts to your own cycle.

Taking it for 25 days or every day (as it is used now) is the bleed-free option for women who are post menopause. You won't have a withdrawal bleed when you stop.

Taking it continuously, which is meant to be every single day not 25 (the leaflet is out of date) is for women with no periods. If you're post menopausal, using both hormones every day you don't bleed at all.)

This explains it really well.

I was on the 25 day plan last year, but I wasn’t 12 months post meno at the time!

After lots of strange bleeding I was switched to 14 days of 2 tablets. Which was worse.

It seems that there’s no comprehensive approach or understanding about HRT amongst HCPs. Seems like perpetual trial and error!

Yes I am in the Uk and yes my Dr prescribed it to give my hair a kick start. I have decided to go vegan for health reasons and by doing so I think it affected my hair as I cut out meat and dairy over night. My hair is slightly better now as I am taking supplements I was lacking so I’m thinking of stopping the HRT altogether as it doesn’t work for me, or at least this regime doesn’t. Is it safe to just stop or do I need any checks?

You can just stop.
Low ferritin can cause hair loss and if you're not getting enough iron in your diet that may be why.

There is a huge lack of knowledge amongst many drs which is shocking as there are very accessible courses (some online) that they can do as part of their CPD.

There is a very comprehensive approach and it's all quite straightforward (although some tweaks may be needed with doses etc) but many GPs don't appear to want to be trained in HRT.
It's shocking that so many women are on the receiving end of poor treatment.

i am taking a high dose of iron at the moment as it was low. I’m going to just stop taking the HRT. Thank you for your advice
