Ridiculous amount of hair loss

Hi all

Went to the GP about a few symptoms (sweating buckets, irregular periods, foggy memory etc) mainly though my hair is coming out in handfuls. He said it could be peri-menopause (I’m nearly 41). I’ve had blood tests and he says everything looks fine so he won’t take it any further atm.

I know it seems silly but I’m gutted about my hair. It’s frizzy, brittle, incredibly tangly. Anyone I’ve spoken to about it has brushed it off as I have very very thick hair so it’s not noticeable, but clearly there’s something wrong.

I don’t know if this is normal or maybe down to something else so if I’ve posted in the wrong page I apologise, but any info or advice would be very welcome!

The hair loss is horrible but it's a bit of a red herring as all your symptoms point to peri menopause.

Can you see another GP?

Blood tests are unreliable and although they are a guide (for women under 45) to rule out other things, they aren't the be all and end all!

I don't understand your GP saying 'they won't take it any further' yet they have said it's peri meno. What's that supposed to mean?

You should ask for HRT as you have all the symptoms and are very young so it's important to protect your bone health especially as your periods are irregular (every month you don't ovulate means your estrogen is low and this will eventually impact on bone density.)

Which blood tests did you have - did they test your thyroid?

Thanks for the replies.

They did test for thyroid, I have a test every year give or take as my parents both had thyroid cancer. I’m going to make an appointment this week as I really don’t feel right, I’ve ordered iron tablets and also collagen powder as I’ve heard generally good things about it

Good luck with your appt.

Those supplements won't replace estrogen. If your GP insists on doing nothing ask them to refer you to a gynaecologist.
