Sun allergy - HRT

I'm on estrogen gel and progesterone and seem to have developed a horrible sun allergy. I had a flare up in the UK at the beginning of this summer and now I'm away in a hot country and have very itchy limbs - with a slight rash to look at. It's very itchy and very painful!

It started last summer a couple of months after I started HRT.

For context I'm very olive skinned, normally tan, rarely burn and I'm covered in factor 50 and mainly in the shade except for swimming. I'm also taking an antihistamine each day.

I've done some googling and it does seem that the estrogen or progesterone could be causing it. It's so painful I'm seriously considering stopping my HRT. I started it because of flat moods and forgetfulness, this is worse but only affects me in the sun.

Anyone else had this?

I've never heard of HRT being linked to sun allergy.

Often, it's a reaction to UV light not just the strength of the sun and can be caused by blocked sweat glands.

I have had the itchy rash over the years (nothing to do with HRT- before HRT) and it was quite unpredictable, depending on the humidity.

I suppose you could stop your hrt and see what happens but my own experience was that the rash would settle down in a few days once my skin 'acclimatised' which had nothing to do with the high UV as it happens in the UK too.

I had slight allergies as a child, and they flared up again at 45

It is not linked to hrt for me (as only started that at 50)

I found it is actually certain Sun creams I am allergic to now that I was not before. I now come out in an itchy rash from Nivea and Piz Bujn that previously I used without issue

So for me it is not linked to hrt. And it is the cream I am allergic to, not the actual sun

Thanks for the replies - it was something I saw on a thread here but also multiple threads on a forum called menopause matters so I wondered if anyone else's had experienced it.

I'm very sure it's not the sun cream as it's the same brand I use at home as well as holidays. I guess it might be just another change that comes with being 50 but I seem to have gone from being able to be in the sun as long as I like to being completely intolerant of it. :(

I have PLE. Take anti histamine daily even if not symptomatic. I always wear a rash vest and board shorts at the beach now, my theory is that there is more uv reflected from the sand / sea.

Gradual exposure helps lessen it but that's not happened this year due to the crap weather so no doubt when I go away at the weekend it will erupt.

Mine isn't related to HRT bb it it didn't start until I was around 40.
