Muscle pain and twitching?

Anyone had this as a result of perimenopause? I’ve had it for a year and I’m increasingly scared that it’s something sinister. Accompanied by dry eyes and agonisingly heavy periods which are still fairly regular. Doctor says at 44 with regular periods it can’t be caused by perimenopause.

Even more worried as nobody else seems to have had this symptom 😩

I had perimenopause symptoms but was told it could not be that as I was on the pill. A more recent (female) GP said that was rubbish!!
Magnesium supplements (or an oil rubbed in) is fab for muscle pain. And I use night eye drops for dryness.

They’re saying I could have perimenopause but it wouldn’t cause muscle pain and twitching. They’re saying that’s anxiety - and it’s not, because the anxiety appeared after the twitching, because I was scared about what was causing it.

I'm afraid many GPs are still talking about lot of rubbish about perimenopause.

Muscle aches and twitches in menopause:

Would you be open to trying HRT?

Meanwhile: Better You Magnesium Spray and get your ferritin level checked (should be over 50, NHS minimum too low).

And if it was anxiety, OP, the NICE guidelines are to use HRT for mood disturbances at this stage anyway.

I had/have muscle pains and twitches (mostly in my legs, so a form of restless legs) throughout my life, and they were definitely affected by my cycle. They got worse in my 50s, and HRT helped (and still helps).

tribpot · 13/07/2024 18:08

Yep, I have definite leg pains linked to my menstrual cycle (I'm having them right now and it's rubbish). I think I read it's linked to oestrogen production (or the lack thereof).

I suffer badly with dry eyes as well, and heavy periods. I have put the dry eyes down to ageing and spending too much time in front of a screen - the thing I've found helps tremendously is getting outside for a walk every day. The fresh air/wind seems to really help my eyes.

BlackStrayCat · 13/07/2024 18:09

Without HRT my hands muscles in legs are on fire.
Its bloody awful. Especially at night.

Hi i have the same is been since June 2024 and still. I m 45 all test from neurolojgist are ok for now , some times is constantly some other times no much.

Yuyu13 · 05/12/2024 04:01

You not alone I m 45

HootyMcBooby · 05/12/2024 13:11

Your GP is full of shit.
Oestrogen can affect neurological function.

I have had severe muscle twitches for the last 2 years, muscle cramping and pain. I even filmed my fingers and the muscles in my feet jumping around on their own, as well as my bicep muscles dancing around on their own, in order to show the neurologist.
I've been investigated for MS, Parkinson's (it runs on both sides of my family) and had panels and panels of bloodwork done, which just showed low Vitamin D (which can also cause neurological symptoms).
Brain scans ruled out anything else.

I also have pins and needles in my arms and hands.

It can DEFINIYELY be caused by the imbalance of hormones. Check out the menopause forums all over the internet, there are many many women with these type of symptoms so GPs need to be a bit more open minded and a bit less stuck in their beliefs.

i know this was a long time ago. I’m 44 with muscle pain and twitches! It comes and goes! Scared because it’s been going on for a couple of months now. Did you ever find out anything more? Are you okay now?

Lemonbaytree · 09/10/2025 16:05

I've had this for a couple of years now. I'm 37!
GPs are not bothered by it at all..
