Medication help - Slynd???

WanderFreelyHazel · 05/07/2024 10:51

Hello all,

I have just been prescribed Estrogel and Utrogestan to help with peri-menopausal symptoms (literally started with the gel yesterday). I am also taking norethisterone as contraception.

I previously was on Yasmin but my BMI is too high and I'm now too old so they switched me to a POP. I have unwanted side effects from the norethisterone, such as facial hair and weight gain along with low mood and anxiety, and have always wanted to go back on Yasmin or the the POP version, Slynd.

I have done a bit of research and have seen a chat which seems to suggest that I could replace the Utrogestan and the Norethisterone with Slynd and this was act as both birth control and the progesterone side of HRT. Am I totally wrong here? I'm considering buying Slynd privately and doing this as I believe that GP's are unable to prescribe it currently (even though it is now licensed in the UK).

If I can do this, do I take Slynd continuously as my presecription for Utrogestan was for 2 tablets for 12 days per month.

I hope this makes sense, I'm finding it all quite confusing. Thank you in advance for any advice/support.

There is a type of POP that can be used as part of HRT but it's off licence and you should see a specialist privately if you want to try it. I don't think it's called Slynd. The POP as part of HRT is also a larger dose- it's 3 tablets a day of the type used.

Why can't you use the POP for contraception?

My advice is that you find a good private consultant and discuss it all with them.

Sorry, I think I've confused things. I am using the POP as contraception - the POP i'm prescribed for this is the Norethisterone.

It sounds as if you have two separate issues going on.
Birth control and HRT.

You can use a POP as part of HRT (in larger doses) that would also act as birth control.

How old are you?

You say you can't use the CP as you're too old (they allow use up to age 50) so do you still need contraception anyway?

Have you considered the Mirena coil which would cover both - HRT and contraception?

Hi,

Yes I need both HRT and contraception (I'm 41) - I was told years ago that I couldn't use CP as I was over 35 and overweight.
