GP said post menopausal at 43 but full HRT triggered cycles again

I'm 43 and after 2 internal scans and 2 blood tests and no periods for 2, nearly 3, years I was diagnosed with early menopause. Gp even said i didn't need to bother with contraception.

Been on daily progesterone and oestrogen gel for about 6 weeks. 2 weeks ago i ovulated, i recognised all the bodily signs and used an old ovulation test which came up strong positive. Yesterday got my period!

I know HRT can trigger bleeds but mine isn't supposed to and this was a proper cycle because i ovulated and period followed two weeks later!

I'm thinking my early menopause diagnosis was wrong and maybe I needed HRT to sort out my cycles! Safe to say I don't think i can go without contraception!

Anyone else had this?

There is some evidence that in women with POI (premature menopause) cycles can resume up to 2 years after a missed period.

Did your scans etc show your ovarian reserve and / or any follicles in your ovaries?

Also, some bleeding is expected with combined continuous HRT for up to the first 6 months' use.

It might be a good idea to see if there is online support groups for women with POI and share experiences?

I have checked and no comment on follicles or number/stage of same plus one of my ovaries is tucked behind and can never be seen. I guess they may have looked at this/reported in more detail if I'd been concerned about having more children.

I've never been totally convinced I was fully menopausal but obviously i knew my hormones weren't working properly.

I don't think this is just HRT related bleeding, it is identical to a period and as I say follows ovulation.

Thanks for the suggestion, great idea 👍
