Mirena question

SCC701 · 18/06/2024 05:12

Hi, I had a Mirena fitted about a year ago which is part of my HRT plan along with oestrogen gel. I had the Mirena because I had mild endometrial hyperplasia and a polyp and the gynae surgeon suggested the Mirena instead of oral progesterone.

It’s all been great and pretty much all the meno symptoms I had have subsided (thank goodness). Last week I saw my GP who suggested vaginal oestrogen as well and last night when I applied it I felt the Mirena strings for the first time. It gave me such an icky uncomfortable feeling and today I feel like I’ve either got period pain (I’m 54, those days are long gone) or like I’ve had a fairly aggressive smear test. I’m not usually very sensitive but I think my cervix is a bit sensitive. No children and had a vasovagal response when a GP tried to fit a Mirena a few years ago, poor little cervix hasn’t seen much action!

I’m fully prepared for this to be in my head but just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar? I’ve made an appointment to see my GP in a couple of weeks so I have time to think about other things and cancel if the feeling goes away.

I don't understand why you would feel the strings. Do you not use the applicator for the oestrogen?

GP advice on my reasons for using it.

Which topical oestrogen are you using? Ovestin? Does it have an applicator? Did you feel the strings with your fingers or the applicator?

I can feel my strings and my cervix as I have a prolapse.
Just nip in and ask them to trim the strings thats what I did.

After a year I've never been able to feel the strings. Apparently they curl up.

Are you trying to apply the oestrogen to your cervix?
