Periods last 4 weeks, stop for a week and start again

I'm 51 and for the past year or so my periods have been very long, often heavy, very frequent. I have a copper coil (not mirena). The latest period was 4 weeks long, it stopped for a week and has started again. The doctor did a pelvic ultrasound scan some months ago that showed a thickened outer womb layer (adenomyosis) but nothing else was picked up. Any advise? Similar experience?

I think your option is a Mirena coil.

Nothing else will touch such heavy bleeding.

Has your dr suggested that?

@JinglingSpringbells I react quite badly to solutions with hormones so have said no to that.

It' s not a one way street. You can try it for 3 months and have it removed if you hate it. Don't knock it till you've tried it ?

Also, isn't the copper coil renowned for causing heavy periods?

Is this still happening? Did your GP refer you for extra checks?

It is so difficult to know at this age if just the menopause coming up or if it could be something else which needs checked out.

Please let us know how you get on.

Go back to the doctor. Ask for a referral to a gynecologist.

I said no to mirena coil for years, but when I finally got one I regretted waiting so long - it was life changing. Went from heavy, erratic, ahonis periods to virtually no bleeding, such a huge relief, got my life back. The hormone release is very localised, very gradual, please consider giving it a try

("ahonis" should say "agonising"!)

How large is your uterus?

I had adenomyosis and my uterus was massive, my belly kept on swelling on and off to almost the size of a full term baby. I also had endo so idk if that was contributing. A coil wouldn’t have touched the sides as my uterus was too big. I tried Tranexamic acid but that gave me horrendous pain but worth a shot. In the end I needed opioids for period pain and had a hysterectomy.

I would go back and ask if a coil would work and what your options are.
