Do menopause symptoms come & go?

I'm 44, had chemo last year and haven't had a period since January. Talked to my consultant and he agreed it's likely I'm in menopause and said I should discuss HRT with my GP, particularly since I have a family history of osteoporosis. I have an appointment with her tomorrow.

Until about a week ago I was having terrible hot flushes, every 1-2 hours day and night, only lasting about a minute but really debilitating especially at night as I had to get out of bed and cool myself down every time. Then a few days ago, they suddenly just stopped. I'm not sure if it's normal for symptoms to come & go like that, or if maybe I'm not in menopause after all - my consultant did say it might be temporary.

I'll ask the GP for blood tests but my consultant warned they might be misleading because of the after-effects of the chemo. I'm also minded to continue down the road of getting HRT (assuming it will take a while) but not actually start taking it for a few months to see if my period turns up, or the hot flushes return.

The only other significant symptoms I have is terrible hip pain, which might be due to something else (have been referred for an MRI). I wouldn't say I've had any of the emotional/anxiety symptoms, although it's been a very up & down year so it is hard to say. My skin is very dry and I've put on a lot of weight, could be menopause but not necessarily.

Has anyone had symptoms, particularly hot flushes, suddenly disappear after a few months? Or is this very uncommon without HRT and make it more likely I'm not in menopause after all?

Yes they can. It is the fluctuation in hormones that can cause good and bad days/weeks etc..... you may find they all come back tomorrow or you may be lucky.

Absolutely symptoms can come and go, even more so I'm sure if you're body is still in a state of flux from the chemo.

And even if you did get a period again, HRT would still be relevant as most of us start taking it while in peri menopause.

I go through phases of major night sweats then nothing for weeks or even months, and that's ON the HRT. It's weird. Ditto, overall, HRT has made my sleep so much better but I still have good nights and bad. over a 30 day period, I definitely get more and better sleep than pre HRT, but it can vary quite dramatically from month to month.

Ok thank you, that is so helpful. Gives me more determination to push ahead for HRT with the GP tomorrow!

Yes absolutely. The benign hip pain was one of my first symptoms, came out of nowhere
