Hi, I've been post menopause for over ten years as I started young. Ive been on the estro gel for several years, which has been great. Initially I had the coil fitted alongside the gel.

The GP prescribed utrogestan tablets just before Xmas 2023 as the coil 5yr time scale was up and had it taken out January 2024.

However this week I have experienced bleeding. GP has refered me to the hospital, but just wondering if the bleed is normal. I've also have problems with my leg at night and the front of my neck to the side hurts. Not sure if it's all linked

Thanks

Any bleeding when switching types of HRT can be common and nothing to worry about.

Your GP should have told you that bleeding when starting combined continuous HRT (which you are if you're using Utrogestan daily) is normal and can continue for 6 months. see link below written by a consultant.

POST MENOPAUSAL -
Continuous combined therapies.
"Period free" or continuous combined therapy can be used by women who are 54 + yrs, or more than one year since last period at any age. The criteria should be fulfilled in order to offer such treatment to women who no longer have a continuing ovarian cycle, so that steady levels of both estrogen and progestogen can be achieved. When there are steady levels of estrogen and progestogen from daily administration of both, the womb lining stays thin. Although some bleeding in the first 6 months of therapy is common, there should not be bleeding after that and the lining does not go through the stages of stimulation and then shedding as it does during a normal cycle and with sequential therapy.

There should be no need for any investigations unless you're bleeding for the first time, now, after 6 months on the new regimen . My maths say you've been using the new regimen for around 4 months?

If youre using 2 pumps of gel the Utrogestan dose is 100mgs a night.
If you're using 3 pumps or more, you may need to increase the Utrogestan to 2 tablets (200mgs) a night.
